: Mxz Starting Problems
TeamSkidooMXZ 04-12-2005, 10:39 AM Hello SW,
I have a 99 Skidoo MXZ 600 which was sitting on my trailer for the past couple weeks. I went to start it on Sunday and it will not turn over. I changed out the plugs and still didn't have any luck. Are there any things that I should check since I have never had any problems starting this sled. Usually a couple pulls with choke on and the sled will fire up.
Thanks,
Mike

Hard to tell from here. Do you mean that it won't turn over or that it won't fire?

It won't fire up. I tried pulling it a couple times and then let it sit so that it won't flood and then tried again a half hour later with the same problem.
idooski 04-12-2005, 11:47 AM What have you done as far as diagnosis? Check for spark? Check for fuel? Check compression? I have seen MPEM's go out after the previous ride. If that's the case, I just saw one on ebay.

I am by far no mechanic when it comes to sleds :-). What are the easiest ways to check for compression, spark, and fuel?
Thanks!
idooski 04-12-2005, 12:43 PM I would check for spark first. To do that, the easiest way is to pull both plugs out. Insert one plug into a spark plug boot and locate the other boot so that the end of the boot is not near any metal. Lay the plug that is in the boot on the head so that the hex portion is touching metal and be sure that the electrodes on the plug are not touching anything. Next, give the rope a pull while watching the plug to see if it sparks. You may have to do this in the shade or have someone shade the plug with their hands so you can see the spark. Try this and post back.

CORY9 04-12-2005, 07:46 PM Like he said. Make sure your kill switch is in the correct position when you perform the test, I know it sounds stupid but I've seen it done.

Make sure the kill switch is pulled up like you would normally start the sled?
Thanks!

You got it!
TeamSkidooMXZ 04-13-2005, 10:04 AM Cool.. Thanks! I probably won't have a chance to try this til tomorrow or maybe this weekend. I will post a reply when I have a chance to try this out.
This site rocks!
TeamSkidooMXZ 04-14-2005, 11:09 AM I checked for spark on both plug wires and that was successful. So, I put both plugs back in and it fired up on the first try. With that said everything seems to be ok.
Thank you very much 'idooski' for all your technical assistance, it's very much appreciated.

That's spooky. I guess sometimes they just want a little extra attention.
TeamSkidooMXZ 04-14-2005, 01:16 PM I will keep an eye on it, and will probably try starting it a couple times over the next couple weeks to be sure that everything is all set.
thanks again.
CORY9 04-14-2005, 09:37 PM Had a simular no start problem sometimes with our 99 600, eventually it just wouldn't and required a new MPEM.
TeamSkidooMXZ 04-15-2005, 01:23 PM Does the MPEM usually go on these sleds? I have 2500 miles on the sled and this is the first time it ever had difficult time starting.
gravy davey 04-21-2005, 11:36 AM My 2000 MXZ600 doesnt like to start after sitting for over 2 weeks. I pull the plugs and sqirt some fuel down the cylinders and she fires right up. :dazed:

You might look at the tops of your spark plugs (the part the wire snaps to) and see if the terminals on top didn't loosen up. If you have this type plug you can secure the tip (it screws on), or buy the same plug just ask for the "solid tip version." I would recommend the solid tip to avoid similar issues. Mike
