: 1998 500 Liquid...bought New Sled.
Ricks_SkiDoo 05-10-2005, 03:46 AM Im buying a new sled...well used rebuilt! My ski-doo guy built this sled for himself a year or so ago and when I saw it I said "hey you selling that?" so now Im buying it. It is a 1996 Formula 500 with 1600 original "ouch" miles, the guy that owned it original beat the hell out of it! and blew the motor etc.
so this guy built a 98 500 motor put it in,upgraded the sled with flex skis,a rebuilt SC-10 suspension (all new shocks, wheels, sliders, track etc.) the sled is complete and has 150 miles on it since all rebuilt.
Its a nice upgrade for me.. seeings I wanted to upgrade my STX with the SC-10 but now I have rebuilt it with new pro-gold,track,wheels on the STX. so that will be my "spare" sled :p but anyway I know nothing about the 1998 500 really except this one all built goes like hell...Havent picked it up and got to thinking..wasnt sure if that motor has reeds or not? yeah yeah I know..alot of rambling for one question :D
labudda 05-10-2005, 05:21 AM I haven't done anything to the carb with mine yet, only general maintenance. I have put about 1400 miles on mine, got at 1700 or so a year ago. The SC 10 suspension though is not all that great. It is stiff and handles really well but when you get into the minefields it is not a pretty picture.
You are right though, it goes like a bat out of hell, for a little 500 it has a pretty quick response when you want it and I bet you will get it over 90, mine tops at 88 with no modifications.
Still can't believe he could ride it that hard to need all that work after so few miles

Its the better riding SC-10 I know what ya meen though,so it doesnt have reeds? I'll know later today but just got curious...this has been geared, clutched, tops out at about 95-98 which is hard to do in my area so Im happy with that. Yeah the guy that had it before was a fisherman
with $$$$$$$$$$$ and didnt give a sweet $hit! so a beatin the machine got. It didnt get totaled or anything..but the motor and factory suspension took a beatin,I imagine it got lots of jumping etc etc. thats why this guy did everything to it! should make me a nice machine,Im curious how it will go against my built 583 thats had only 800 or so miles on its newly rebuild  but where the 500 is alot lighter,it actually could have less HP and still prolly beat my 583
gravy davey 05-10-2005, 12:48 PM Thats a rotary valve engine.
97mach1 05-10-2005, 02:37 PM Engine Type 494. Rotary Valve Twin. i.e. no reeds.
I have always loved the rotary valve engines (500, 583, 670... 720, 787 in the Sea-Doo's..), great design and always seem to go forever.
Ricks_SkiDoo 05-10-2005, 06:20 PM ok good to know! its just like my 583 then, rotory and RAVE good motor like u said!
FreezerBurnt 05-13-2005, 03:47 AM Stick the 583 into it :sly:

Kennyman 05-13-2005, 04:46 AM What is the difference between a rotary valve engine and a reed?
I know what a reed engine engine is, but how is a rotary engine on the inlet side?
And what is the pros and cons between these engines?
A link to a site would also be good if you don't want to explain.
MyDoo 07-12-2005, 01:46 PM Why not put the 583 cylenders on the 500 bottom asnd make a 600
they realy go with some thick base gaskets and a tutch up on the bottom of the pistons and they fit right on my brother has one of these with a set of decker pipes and it eats 670 ho's for brakfast just a thought  the differance between arotary valve and areed valveis a rotary valve is a gear driven disk that rotats and opens and closes the intake port ware as a reed valve has a pair of reed peddels that are sucked open to let the fuel into the crank case. the rotery engine is better for making power and more reliable but can't be turned back ward so RER wont work and it is heavyer and the reed is cheeper to build
