: Diesel truck owners
Do the Doo 09-02-2002, 11:34 PM I have been eyeing a new crew cab truck, but I am not here to compare brands. They all have their negatives and positives. What I noticed is no one will print gas mileage for diesel engines. So, for those driving 2500/250 HDs Crew cab/Quad Cab with Power Strokes, Duremax, or Cummings, what is you mpg not towing? And what is the the best you have seen on a road trip NOT towing. I am guessing over 600 miles on one tank. Average speed 70-75 mph. Am I way off? please help me out.
* * Thanks
Do the Doo
PS This truck will be making a road trip (4300+ miles) unloaded to Canada, then trailing back. Wife is Canadian and we have to get here crap out of the parents place and bring it back to the US. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Sled Dogg 09-03-2002, 12:02 AM My friends have had them all and they all love the Allison in the GM. Now for milage it really varys with the driver. Do they put it on cruise, do they drive up on people then accelerate? These dictate the fuel used. I've seen over 22mpg out of the 6.5 turbo from gm and p-stroke. Both were single rear wheeled trucks, crew cabs, automatics. They also had teh lower level banks kits and the propane injection from ATI. They had they milage jets installed with both trucks. Both trucks also ran 33" tires and 4.10/11 gears. *They would get 14-18mpg towing trailers from 2500 to 10,500lbs. His big boat was the heaviest at 41'ft. (his boat sucked the fuel he saved, 1350hp x3 = huge fuel bills) He sold it after a year of fueling it LOL!

dooman 09-03-2002, 06:10 AM sled dogg, are you refering to the transmission?the engine in gm's is from isuzu.I have *my '02 cummins 3/4 ton and had an 01 cummins one ton, they both get around 20-22 mpg on the road empty, towing they drop to around 9-12 mpg.the best mpg truck I had was my 97 3/4 ton ,cummins that got 15 towing and 23-25 on the road.I will say with that when I was up north,a couple weeks ago, empty I got around 735 miles on the tank.
BUTCH800 09-03-2002, 08:53 AM I'm getting 19 mpg(and still climbing) with my '02 Chevy Duramax. About 12 mpg towing my 27 ft. fifth-wheel (9,000#). No problems yet. Also, it's much quieter than the other diesels. Maybe that will be the new thing for all manufacturer's........."quiet diesels" http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Sled Dogg 09-03-2002, 10:12 AM I was refering to the Trans i the GM. It is one slick trans for sure. I forgot that both trucks were 4x4's needless to say.

Machzzzz1 09-03-2002, 01:29 PM Do the Doo.
The 2003 Dodge Ram HD trucks 2500 and 3500 are going to have 2 new engines.
1. a 345Hp 5.7L hemi gas engine.
2. a 305HP Cumming Diesel TRUCK engine. Making the most torque out of any production truck engine in its class.
The 3500 also can haul more then the chevy. *A 12000lbs GVWR vs. chevys 11400
The new diesel is refined and pumping out more power and torque.
With out a dought the 2003 Dodge ram is going to be the toughest built truck with its front axles and Cummings power plus 6 speed manual tranny availabilty and a chassie that is close to %75 stiffer then the previous dodge ram.
I would highly recommend you get this truck. *I got the 1500 2002 ram and its been a joy and pleasure to own and drive and everyone gets out of your way. *
Also the new dodge ram chassie and cab have a excellent design. *They have tons of storrage space. *It seems that behind every thing there is a compartment to put stuff in. *The seats are also very comfertable. *
I gurantee you will love this truck.
Rocketman 09-03-2002, 02:24 PM Machzzzz1....answer his question..don't try selling him a truck. I'm tired of this clutter.
dooman 09-03-2002, 03:25 PM butch no dodge, but I am glad you bought the diesel .tell us how much you like it.I remember you saying wife said no diesel,I bet you are glad she changed her mind.and your right ford started it but the new cummins is going to be real quiet as well,I think its as quiet as the duramax.
sleddinfool 09-03-2002, 08:46 PM I hope the new dodge frames are stronger then the 00-01 trucks. A buddy of mine has one the frame is just tearing right off of the rear end. He say's it from towning his ez-dumper trailer. Is dodge going to make a heavy duty crew cab for 03'? Kevin
taconitehead 09-04-2002, 12:13 AM I have a 02 pstroke crew cab that has a hypertec in it. At the speeds you are talking about, not towing, it is getting 19.5. The truck has about 10,000 miles on it, and I have been told the it takes about 20,000 or so to break in. The hypertec brings it to 300 hp and 600 ft lbs torque. My back tires are going away fast.
Machzzzz1 09-04-2002, 12:13 AM The new dodge frames are hydroformed and much stronger. *And yes they will have the Crew cab or Club Cab for 2003.
Steven Hohman 09-04-2002, 08:09 AM Hey Machzzzz1, he is asking about the mileage, not the whole truck, I admit that they all have their positives and negatives, but my fathers 01' HD 2500 gets about 20-25 on the highway w/out pulling anything, he hasn't pulled anything else with it besides the sled trailer, which it gets 19-22 mpg.
Machzzzz1 09-04-2002, 08:33 AM I was replying to sleddingfool.
BUTCH800 09-04-2002, 08:51 AM I like the truck alot! WOW, what a difference coming from a gas motor. Awsome pulling power AND great gas milage. A couple reasons I went with the Chevy.....As dooman said the "boss' said no diesels. But I can be very persistant http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . As I said before, it's quiet. IMO the quietest out there. May not always be, but at the time I was looking it was. Also the extended cab is much roomier (if that's a word) than that of the Ford. I could have went with the crew cab, but that's not what I wanted. Third, (and my favorite) the GM discount. It's hard not to notice the $6,500 off the top. Also, I took into consideration the reputation of the service dept. of the dealers in my area. I wasn't happy with several of the Dodge dealerships in my area (I'm sure there are good ones around, just not around me). I have been taking my car to the Pontiac/GMC dealer in my area and have been very satisfied with thier timeliness and ability to do the job correctly the first time. I just didn't care for the looks of the GMC. But I will ahve any after warranty work I need done there.
Sorry to go on and on. If anyone has any other ?'s feel free to e-mail me.
Also, do any of you diesel lovers know of any aftermarket items out there for the Duramax (chips/programers, etc.) I can't seem to find much available yet.
Sled Dogg 09-04-2002, 09:47 AM I believe Banks should have something out now and i know that I've seen stuff for the Allison tranny(programmer). I don't know when we'll see a big Banks Power Pack type package as there is so much they have to work around on the Duramax.

sleddinfool 09-04-2002, 08:54 PM That is good, I do like the looks of the dodge ---- but ahhh-well --emmmm, I work at a ford dealer and do get A-plan so I take about 6,000 of the price of a ford. Taconitehead? If you chip a ford it will burn the trans unless you put an aftermarket trans cooler and guage in it. Fords guages are sub-par at best. There is a write up on this in the SW general column. A buddy of mine just baked his trans at 30,000 on his 99 superduty-- he does tow a 48' enclosed two car trailer though.
taconitehead 09-04-2002, 11:45 PM Sleddinfool, I have noticed some people talk about tranny problems in some trucks. I have the PPIII which is about the lowest upgrade that can be put in. I would like to hear what you have to say. Please send me anything you care to share by pm. Thanx *Dave.
Wolfman 09-06-2002, 06:31 PM Mileage will directly relate to how you equip your truck and your driving style.
My truck: *1999 Dodge Ram Cummins 24 valve Turbodiesel
3.54 axle, 5 speed manual 4x2.
Best recorded empty mileage: *23.7 mpg Dallas to Denver
Best recorded towing mileage: 17.5 mpg pulling a two axle trailer with a car on board.
Mileage figures are obtained maintaining the posted limit or 65 mph, whichever is lower.
Do the Doo 09-06-2002, 10:11 PM Butch800, here is another site similar to SW site but for diesels. Mostly Duramax posts. They can answer a lot of your questions: *http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/
Reason I ask the question here is the truck will be pulling sled for most of its life, maybe a 34' boat waaaay down the road but planning for what I may pull is better than buying the carriege before the horses. This is excellent information!!!! Please keep adding to this post!!
*I have ask this question on Diesel.com and no one directly answered the question, just blah, blah, blah. Crew cab is a must, one child now, possible another on the way. Waiting for a time limit before a "test" is taken. I am 6'3" 250+ and if I pick up Rocketman for a sled trip, I'll need the crew cab just for his food alone. *HAHAHAHA I want a crew cab so 4-5 grown adults can fit comfortably.
But keep posting guys!! I am showing the wife this information so keep it clean...please *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/inlove.gif
Thanks again,
Do the Doo
Sled Dogg 09-06-2002, 10:40 PM I was at the ford dealer today. I found out ford is about to smoke dodge and gm i think. They are producing a new 32 valve, 6litre power stroke motor along with the old one. It's going to put out 560lbs tq @2000rpm and 325hp@3300rpms. And they have a new Torqshift 5 speed auto trans. They also have a new xlt sport package with monocromatic paint that looks sharp. I've loved how dodge has been doing this. The v10 is cranking out 310 hp and 425lbs tq now also. And the old 7.3 p-stroke will still be avalible.
Caleb
Do the Doo 09-06-2002, 10:52 PM My concerns on the Powerstroke, that it performs better than the Triton V8. We have the Ford Triton engines and they are poor on trailering on the highway when we deliver boats. They loose speed very easy (65-70) and even the pedal to the floor, the traffic pulls away. We are talking tow weight under 4000pds.
Doo
Sled Dogg 09-06-2002, 11:11 PM Fords v8's suck for towing heavy. My buddy has gone way way way over the towing recomendation ford set pulling bull dozers and other heavy equipment with his power strokes. He has a git kit from banks. Drive a turbo diesel and you'll desire nothing else besides they get great milage and incredible resale. I'd look at a used one if money is a concern as you can find them with very low miles for way less than new. But fords new motor and trans will kick ###.
Caleb
Do the Doo 09-06-2002, 11:23 PM I will have to buy used, $42K is a real kick in the teeth. Especially now. I was laid off two weeks ago. The high tech industry suck out here in New Engalnd at the moment do to the economy.
I just found this site for anyone wanting a Suburban with diesel power. I read they are the largest seller of diesel Suburbans.
