This was taken in Paradise MI the first week of January 2005. The Blue sled is a 91 Yamaha SRV540, and the red sled is a 85 Yamaha Phazer480. Great time up in the UP. Planning on going again this winter!

Hey,
I love seeing older sleds out on the trails, even though where I sled almost EVERYONE has a brand new machine! LOL

I'll post some more of my 91 Phazer LE when I get home. I love this sled... but maybe because it's my first and only one.

Nice looking Yammi's.
They look great for the year. Pretty agressive styling.
Do they have many KMS on them?

The '95 has 3200 miles, and the '96 has 2200 miles. You should see the engine compartment, and undersides... you could eat off of either they are so clean. I could post a few more pics if you want.

OK, here are a couple of pictures under the hood (mind you these were taken the morning after I picked up the sleds - no time to "clean them up" :blahblah: ) These things were in showroom condition when I nabbed them. :D

Wow, that is incredibly clean! Keep them that way!
Looks like they are liquid cooled. What size are the engines?
I've got a 485cc Fan Cooled, but she flies. It's a small light sled. Only has 2,700 KMS on it, and I'll be putting on alot this winter!

They are both 600's (598cc to be proper). Can't wait to get on the trails with them.

Another....

My mountain slayer is a '95 Phazer with 136x1.75" paddle track; it's geared down with a 7-tooth driver and converted to mixer. Other wise stock......everyone under rates these Phazers....I love parking it next to 800's with 156" tracks at the top of the mountain!!

Hey shawnmcgr,

Those pictures are awesome!!! Look at that little sled go eh!
I'm guessing you close the front louver for riding in powder like that! haha
How many kms do you have on it?
My Phazer only has the 121 inch track with 3/4 inch lugs, so I don't think I could climb like you. Sounds like you really geared that thing for performance. Alot of things I've never even heard of!
That'll teach people to underestimate the Yami Phazer. I love that sled.
Keeper' running man.
Any more pics?

I leave the louver open in the front during spring riding...it was +15C that day! The snow is total set-up everywhere...go anywhere snow....a 121 would do fine!

Here is a picture earlier in the year....you have to stand up while riding to see over the snow and you have to think about where your going to stop or you will be digging your self out (any machine). Every vent on the machine is closed for days like these (except the fan intake).

I've got 5500km on it and going strong!! I'll never sell that sled!!

Ya I would say the phazer is an incredible machine...I got an 89 phazer 480 and its got over 8000 miles on her and never rebuilt or nothing and it still runs strong as ever...The only problem I ever had was suspension and track clips but Im pretty sure thats just from all the air Ive caught on it :D and the best part is if you get stuck they are so light you can just yank em right out and go and leave ur buddies burried with their heavy tanks

Wicked pics everyone, getting goosebumps seeing all that nice snow again, mmmmmm snow

akreivens, looks like you got stuck in that one picture.

shawnmcqr, in that pic of your phazer loaded with snow, werent you worried about snow getting in your fan and on your fan belt, which turns to water, allows the belt to slip and then cooks your engine. Im always looking out for that on my sled because iv seen phazers in shops where that has happened. I was told that if you put a very porus plastic fish tank filter and stick it in the fan intake hole, it will keep the snow out and allow air in.

raceman
08-15-2005, 12:23 AM
Ive never had a problem with the fan belt slipping and ive had quite a bit of snow under the hood and in the fan... If you take ur fan shroud off you can tighten or loosen the tension of the belt by adding or taking a way shims or its something like that im not to sure...Ive done it before and im pretty sure thats what you do but you gotta make sure it aint too tight and wear ur belt out or snap it cuz that could spell bad news

Your absolutely right yamahammer. I got the sled stuck pretty good there. I went off my beaten trail into deep powder on a pretty good uphill. I muscled it around to face downhill and thought it would make for a good pic.

Yammahammer,

I have not had a problem with it yet although I have thought about doing what you have described. Sometimes in heavy snow or if I dive under a ways after landing a jump in deep snow the fan gets plugged with snow and the motor loads up. I have to stop and clear the fan. With a screen I'd be concerned about heavy snow pushing the screen material into the fan. No problems so far...my motto is if it ain't broke don't fix it!! I do check the belt tension to keep it tight.

akrievins,

That Pahser II looks to be in good shape!! Mine has swallowed a few trees so has a more of a just landed on the hood look to it! I gave up on replacing the windshield on it as I rolled it three times this year!

ttyl Shawn

PS Raceman...you got that right about being light....everytime I help someone else lift oneof thier liquid cooled machines out of a hole I'm happy to have a fan cool. They are tough as nails as well...mine has been rolled I don't know how many times (one end for end down a hill climb) and never done any major damage (breaks the windshield every time)!!!

Since both shawn and akreivens have phazers, maybe you can both help me. About mid season, my sled started making a real loud squealing sound at idle, and it is not from the drive belt. It sounds like it is coming from the fan belt or something to do with that area, like if the fan pulley bearings were shot or the belt was in need of replacing. This only happens while at idle and everything else works fine.

Shawn, you mentioned belt tension, could that be what is causing this problem?. If not, I think im just going to replace the belt, after all, the sled does have 16 000 kms on it.

yammahammer,

I had the same problem with my 88 Wildcat, with a polaris 650 triple. When you stop, it starts making a screaching noise. Then, I started losing horse power. I tried climbing a big a hill, ( with the throttle to the handle bars ), and I was only putting out 5500 rpm's. I was moving at about 10mph. I could usually climb that same hill, at around 50, with the throttle, only at half.

Yamahammer

From the description you gave from the wild cat and the 650 polaris, it almost sounded as if your bearings or rings were shot. I am going to check my compression this year and all my seals. Any idea what kind of compression I should see on the phazer motor?

I have noticed no loss in power what so ever, and the noise is only coming from the side of the engine that the fan is on. This is not to say that it is a quiet sound becuase you can hear it with the hood down, but only when idling at its lowest rpms. It definately sounds like a squeaking belt to me but my dad thinks its the bearing.

The sound would remind you of squeaking belts on cars and trucks, but more clear.

shawnmcgr
09-01-2005, 08:44 AM
Tough to diagnose a sound without hearing it - I always start with the easy things first so... ya, check the belt tension. Have the bearings ever been done on the machine? I have not had to replace any bearings under the hood yet so cannot give you much advice on that....if it is a bearing hopefully its the fan bearing and not a crank bearing! The fan bearing shouldn't be too bad to get at though I have not done it myself.

I just moved to Calgary and have not moved my sled yet otherwise I could go haver a look and be a little more useful!

My engine has had nothing replaced or changed. The engine has never been opened up or anything liek that.

Only thing under the hood that was changed was my drive axel bearings that were replaced when I got the new track on, just felt they should be changed while the sled is apart. This has nothing to do with the noise becuase any noise from those bearings would happen during motion.

Thanks for you help though, I will post more details when I start working on the sled this fall, and have it running. Maybe ill make a short video to allow you to hear it.

I almost forgot to mention, there is no play at all in the fan bearing, so that could be an indacation that the bearing is still good, and is not creating the noise.

My fishing machine. A 93 Venture XL 485 fan, which is an "entry level touring sled". Picked it up this year for $500 and it's in MINT condition. 121" studded track, elec. start, reverse, hand warmers front and back. The feature I like the most about this sled is the little light behind the fuel/oil guage hoses. This year I won't have to carry a flashlight to see how much gas I have left. :D It's extremely UGLY, but is a good strong runner, and should get me lot's of fish this season!

Another great one! Hope the fan didn't suck in too much snow there! Are you ever worried about the snow melting and making the fan belt slip causing overheating?

Just wondering...I was riding in about 1 foot of powder and it always felt like I was going to fall off when I lifted a ski. Do I need more powder to be able to keep a ski lifted in the air? Not sure if I'm doing it right.

Hi , I have a Phazer 2 st 1992 love the sled it's awsome very reliable, if you want to improve the ride in the back put on a RYDE FX shock on it made the world of difference, My sled has 10,000 kms just rebuilt the clutchs for the first time the motor has not been touched it has all new shocks, and i will be puttinf a new track on in the spring..( ripsaw)..If anyone is interested I have a sleigh hitch for a Phazer or early Venture bought it from royal years ago won't fit my lonng track $20

[/b]If you have access to an automotive stethescope you can pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from. If you don"t have one you can use an old broom handle cut down to about 2ft which will work also. If you can get at the fan belt while it"s running rub an old candle on the pulley side. the wax will soften the belt. If it"s too dangerous while running shut it off and rub the candle on it. Just a couple of cheap alternatives.

Um....yeah
I already seized it up from snow melting on the fan belt...oops

I found that it is easy to ride with one ski up (boondocking is what it is called i believe) in like 1 to 2 ft of powder, or deeper. However, the phazer is so light that you can ride on one ski on hardpacked trail, although it is fairly hard on the suspension and track. Still fun though...its all in the balance...
