Hey all,
Well it is that time of year again to get them ready. I have a dumb question. :dazed: Gotta change out the primary and secondary springs in a 2004 Z-370. Do I have to pull either clutch to do this. Been so long since I have done a refresh on a clutch I can not remember. :whistling: Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Z

I would pull them to clean them up real good while your changing them. You can do both on the sled, but you just have to be careful. The driven spring could give you a little bit of a hassle getting it back on,,, but nothing that cant be done.

To take out the primary spring... First remove the bolt that holds the clutch on. Then evenly loosen the 6 or 9 smaller bolts that hold the face of the clutch. The spring will be under compression but as you loosen the bolts, the force will be minimal. Change your spring.
Clutches are balanced, make sure you put the cover back on the same way it came off. Some clutches have an x on the fixed and movable sheaves and on the cover. Align the x's to assemble correctly. IF you don't have any marks, use a felt marker before you disassemble.
To put the clutch cover back on, find a big washer that will fit on the clutch bolt. Install the spring, and start the clutch bolt through the cover with the washer on it so the bolt will help compress the spring. As you tighten the bolt, it will compress the spring and allow you to start the 6 or 9 small bolts that hold the clutch cover on. WHen you get the small bolts tightened, remove the clutch bolt, remove the washer, and re-install the clutch bolt. Torque to specs. Don't overtighten the smaller bolts, you can break them pretty easily.
It is wise to remove the secondary at least once a year, even if you don't change anything just to keep the clutch from rusting onto the shaft. It should come off easily when you remove the holding bolt. Clean and lubricate the shaft with some grease or never-seize before you put it back on to make next year's maintenance simpler.
Hope that helps :)

Does any one know for sure what the thread size and length of the clutch bolt is? I looked on Browns and it said the thread was 1/2 - 20 but not real sure on the length.
