: Closed Trails?

I was speaking to my brother-in-law who farms in the Coldwater ON area, and he told me that the farmers in that area were not going to give permission for the trails to cross their property this year, owing to problems that were encountered last year. Things like gates left open at the end of the season, riding off trail, excessive noise, etc.

Does anyone from that area have any info on this, as we were hoping to do some trips there this year?

Thanks for the update.

That's what I was hoping to hear. The brother-in-law can be an opinionated SOB when he wants to be.

Hope everything stays that way.

I have good friends who live in the Coldwater area and when I was up 3 weeks ago saw a bunch of atvs stopped along side the road going North towards Big Chute by 2 OPP cars. The OPP's and the riders didn't look to be real happy!!My 1 friend lives on that road and has said the atvs up that way are doing alot of damage ( along with the big-tired off-road trucks-especially on the properties owned by the Hydro .)They are continually running through his private road and on a few attempts to stop them hes been sworn at and there is talk of the road being gated and locked! He doesn't mind the sleds as if there no snow to ride on, they don't damage anything. As we all know a few rotten apples spoil the entire barrel, same thing goes here.

I know exactly where you're talking Pete.
That's the McLean Lake area.
You had me confused for a minute as Big Chute Road is REALLY long!!
We live in the same area, but are on Matchedash Bay.

The 'summer toys' are upsetting alot of people.
It's making things really difficult for peeps that responsibly ride toys in the summer to enjoy their sport because of these so called 'bad apples'.

Bigfish: I talked to hubby tonight (just to make sure I had my info correct) and he told me that the only private field we use is Devine's which gives us access to the railbed.
Even though we appreciate the use of this field it wouldn't be a huge loss if it was closed.
We would just ride the 500 feet to the railbed from Anderson Line.

We have had a few incidents riding with 'new' friends.
They are told before we leave the house that YOU MUST STAY ON THE TRAIL!!!
People tend to forget that even though we are fortunate enough to have a railbed to ride, there are farmer's fields on either side of that bed.
It really hurts to see a sled scar shooting off a trail right across a field just because buddy bought a powder sled or climbing sled and wants to use it.

We do have alot of areas where you can 'play' you just have to stay on the trails until we get there :) .

We live in a small subdivision; we always ride slow and wave to our neighbours.
It's just a courtesy saying we love our sport, but we also respect your space, privacy and your right to quiet.
They know our sleds and so far we've had no problems :D .

Unfortunately, we did lose a trail last winter due to summer toys (that wasn't the bad part); the bad part is this trail is used by trappers who because of the mess lost a whole season.

This is an awesome area to ride Bigfish and our trails can take you almost anywhere.
I will be talking to more club members in the next few months (I'm a club member too) and I will keep you posted.

ONTHINICE- Thanks for the invite but I didn't know about it til tonite. Where did you have the feast? I am sure it was a " good time to be had by all"! Definitely would have liked to stopped by but Im sure there would have been no beer!!!!! :lmao: My friend lives on James Drive ( a little private road on Big Chute Road between the 2 RR tracks. His property is bordered by a large bay that by boat you can get to the Chute. Main sled trail runs right next to him.Coldwater is a really neat place and I love staying at his place a few times during the Winter as we can venture far from his place and return days later.Maybe we can hook up this Winter for a tour. But if the gas prices keep going up, I think I will take 1 piston out of the 800XC and make it a 400-LOL! .
