: Protect Our Volunteers
revrnd 08-24-2005, 03:03 PM Gang I got this email from Candace Fortin who works for the Northern Corridor (the folks that bring you those trails between Cochrane & Hearst). If you get a chance could you check out the link?
Thanks
Dear friend,
We are requesting your support in a province wide campaign to assist us to Protect our Volunteers (POV).* POV is a coalition of Ontario’s community service groups calling for affordable liability insurance to protect volunteers.* The program is geared to convincing the Province of Ontario to enact legislation to shield volunteers from unreasonable claims of liability.
In the past 4 years, OFSC’s liability insurance premiums had risen over 1000%.* These premiums were a result of numerous liability claims against our trails and volunteers.* Our organization is based on thousands of volunteers.* However things are changing for volunteers, and we are at risk of losing volunteers if no action is taken.
Please assist us in sending a message to the Ontario government. The program is simple, we ask that you visit the website and type in your information and comments if you so choose.* Please follow this link: Protect our Volunteers (http://www.protectourvolunteers.ca)
We thank you for your support in protecting our volunteers.
Sincerely,
Northern Corridor du Nord

Revrnd- as many times before when asked to send a message to the Canadian Government to help out in snowmobile issues, the form always asked for pertinent information including zip codes. In each and every case we try to fill out and send it, our USA zip code is NOT recognized on any of these forms. Seeing many, many US riders love the Ontario trail system and would like to help out-they cannot either because of this zip code error message.Maybe I should start using a friends postal code in Ontario? Thanks!

Thumbdoctor 08-25-2005, 11:11 PM This is what I told Mr McGuinty:
"Mr Honourable McGuinty,
Please consider the model Quebec is currently using concerning our trail system. The liability insurance rider is consolidated onto the provicial trail pass therefore collectively reducing insurance capital cost and liability risk to the land owner / volunteer. I too purchase Ontario trail system passes and support the ideals of goodwill to all who use these great trail networks. I volunteer and am a property owner who allows passage to snowmobile clubs on my land without prejudice to conduct governed by the OFSC or our Quebec affiliate.
Please consider the great team players who generously give their spare time and resources to boost this revenue generating sport we truly love.
Sincerely,
S.R. Collins"

Dear Mr. MiGuinty
As President of both our OFSC Local Snowmobile Club and of OFSC District #5 and also the founding Chairperson of Victim Assistance Services of Oxford County, (V.A.S.O.C.)I'm appalled that there would be even a hint of hesitation to enact legislation to protect volunteers in this great province of Ontario.
Regarding our community V.C.A.R.S. program, (V.A.S.O.C.) I would hope that you being the premier of Ontario, that you would indeed be aware that every police force is required to start the process of establishing V.C.A.R.S. programs in their communities. With all of the media attention focussing on the lack of protection for volunteers from frivilous lawsuits, it is difficult enough to recruit new volunteers and keep current volunteers from burning out. Why would you expect these people to continue to sacrifice time with their families and their own personal activities to provide a valuable and much needed resource to victims of crime and circumstance.
SHAME ON YOU AND YOUR FELLOW ELECETED OFFICIALS.
Regarding the wonderful OFSC Snowmobile Trails that thousands of volunteers build, maintian and enjoy with their friends and families. These trails generate a huge amount of revenue for many businesses and families across the entire province from the shores of Lake Erie to the south, all the way to the Great White North. Again, it's volunteers providing these trails that make this all possible. Unfortunately, we are losing volunteers in this segment as well because of fears of frivilous lawsuits being brought againts them. Frankly, I don't blame them. Why would anyone sacrifice their precious time to be put at risk of loosing their financial future to an eroneous judgement made within our judicial system.
Again, SHAME ON YOU and YOUR FELLOW ELECTED POLITICIANS.
I'm also sure that you're aware that students must volunteer a minumum of 40 hours in their community in order to be able to graduate from highschool in this province. How can you as the leader of this province put all of those students at risk for merely trying to graduate from highschool.
SHAME ON YOU MR. McGUINTY!!!
I strongly urge you to rectify this situation now before so much that is so valuable in this province is lost forever.

Hello back Gade Girl
Have you tried the new (name & owners) restaurant yet? Shakers. My son and I ate there a couple of times and I'm impressed. I'm sure Doug (our trail coordinator) will run the trail there as close as he can again.
We'll always accept any offers for help on the trails.
Do you live near Plattsville, Bright, Innerkip?
We usually start in early October.
We have our meetings at the Plattsville Library (at the school) in their back room on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00PM.
Hopefully, we'll see you there.
Thanks for the offer.
Jeff

me&mymxz 09-19-2005, 07:37 PM We need to keep this active.
Please pass it along to anyone you know who is involved with volunteer organizations.
This would also work for all those high school students who are required to put in volunteer hours
Please spread the word
