: Looking To Buy A Polaris...
akrievins 08-26-2005, 10:57 AM Hi everyone,
Incase you didn't see this in the general snowmobiling forum...
My brother is looking to get a sled so he can join me on the trails this year. We've found a 1992 Polaris Indy Lite with only 1,050kms on it. It's at a dealership and they are asking 1899.99 CAN. We're gonna try to talk it down a bit, but what do you guys think of this sled?
It's got the 340cc Fan cooled engine.
Any hlep is appreciated...
Thanks,
akrievins.
SnoKing 08-26-2005, 11:11 AM I have a friend that owns 2 Indy Lites he bought for his children. I rode one belonging to a friend in Minneapolis back in about 1994 when I weighed 280 lbs. I was quite inpressed with the sled at that time with the way it performed with me on it. I see you ride a Phazer and the Lite should handle comparably or maybe slightly better. Performance wise the Phazer will be quicker and faster.
If he is under 160 lbs it should be o.k. I think that price is too high.
Offer him $1000 CND and don't be embarrased to low buck him.
Good luck

Thanks for the info! Sounds like you know your stuff! Good to know that I'd be able to beat his sled! ;) haha..
SnoKing 08-26-2005, 11:27 AM Let me know if he buys it and how well he negotiated the price.

Dont be so sure. My brother has a '87 Polaris Indy Trail (340 fan) and it was just as fast as my '90 Phazer II was. Both would do about 70 mph topped-out.

I'll second that opinion, the kid rode a 88 Indy Sport 340 for a number of years, and it was (still is, sold it to a friend, and the 340 fan cooled twin is still running fine) a great sled. It has the same engine as the Lite, and yes it would do 70 on hard pack, no problem.
Octane 08-26-2005, 08:13 PM My bro's Trail is special though. Its got trailing arms from an Ultra (38" ski stance instead of the stock 34") and its got Fox shocks on the front.
Granted, its nothing that anyone else couldnt do, but you dont see a whole lot of Indy Trails with Fox shocks.

CORY9 08-26-2005, 08:26 PM I don't know how you guys are getting 70mph out of a 340 when my wifes 03 550 fan is lucky to touch that number. Perhaps it's the lite weight of the sled that helps?

I hear ya Cory... 70mph seems like alot from a 340. The 485 can get there, but still, that's pretty fast for a fan no matter what size engine.

hebi you got your sleds all mixed up
In 1988 Polaris released the Indy Trail SP which as mentioned had the widened ski satnce and gas shocks
I believe they also had that same model in 89
In 90 it became the Indy 500 SP with a LC engine
I have a Supertrax or Snow Goer mag here somewhere with all the sleds for sale that year
It was a 488 fan just like the regular Trail and that would explain why your Phazer and it were the same speed :sly:
And yes I have seen a 87-90 Indy SPORT 340 hit 73mph on radar
sawman 08-27-2005, 11:53 AM Like FB I to have seen the mid 70's on 87-90 indy 340 sports. But that 92 lite will be lucky to hit 60 remember its direct drive we had one and the performance from our 90 sport to the indy lite was quite disapointing.
Octane 08-28-2005, 08:30 PM Its a Sport, not a Trail, sorry.

akrievins 09-01-2005, 12:34 PM Hey guys,
I posted a message in the general forum about what I found when I went to see the Indy Lite. Check it out if interested...
bripaintball 09-07-2005, 08:29 AM its an okay sled
mrpolaris18 09-07-2005, 07:40 PM Bit steep of a price if ya ask me. Just my .02
tifa_5_2000 09-10-2005, 08:35 AM just some food for thaught. it sounds like you working on a budget but this will help in the long run. get into an '01 or newer edge chassis 500/440. if its too slow in a year or 2 the motors swap really easy. you can drop a 6 7 or an 8 right into the edge chassis in an afternoon. you should be able to find one for $2500-3000. mike
bripaintball 09-12-2005, 08:28 AM yeah the price is a bit steep
mrpolaris18 09-14-2005, 12:13 PM Here we AK. Best deal I can do for you. Bring me $1,900 CASH and take my 1995 XLT 600 home. Mint Cherry shape even with reverse and new clutch kinda hopped up a bit. Nothing but synthetic ran through it. And I'll throw in the Polaris canvas cover. Let me know. Mark That's the deal for this month because as it gets closer to winter, the price'l go a bit higher.
xc-mark 09-16-2005, 05:00 PM If you can find a little more $ a 2001 and new edge 550 SS would be a better choice. bullet proof, honest 65~70 mph on hard pack and much better handling then anything older then it.
