Hi Guys and Gals,
I've been watching the forum for about 2 years now. I've met some of you on the trails and finally decided to sign up.

It's a snowmobile site however my first post is about motor bikes :bash:

Is there any women on the site that ride? What do you ride, what did you start with?

I got the itch to buy a bike, and it wouldn't have happened if my new sled were in yet. :cussing:

Here's the situation.
I've only ever rode a dirt bike. I don't have my M lic. yet. I have no bike knowledge! I use to really want what some people call a crotch rocket  but ...... I would be more likely to get hurt.
I've been looking at a lot of honda shadows between 1985 to 1990. Someone recommended that I look at a 250! Another told me to stay away from V-twins because it's a rough ride.
If you guys were buying your wife her first bike, what would it be and why?
I sure wish my new doo :inlove: would come in so I would stop thinking about this
thanks guys, you know SWRules

first off WELCOME . if your worried about spelling there is a spell checker on your post page . and to answer your Q about what i would want my wife to start on it would be a dual purpose bike like a dr400 made by suzuki or similar bike .they can go on and off road. they are fun to ride with an upright riding position meaning it is easy to balance . they are light meaning they are easy to handle . jmho . Thanks for your input snofrog. I thought about one a few years ago, but I'm a little worried that I would get caught off road, know what I mean :) It's so tempting to take a short cut and farmers hate dirt bikes

snofrog
08-27-2005, 09:33 PM
well you could put strictly street tires on it to eliminate the temptation of "off road" and still be considered trendy as it would then be a super motard (sp?) lol. it is still a great starter bike .good luck ! M

my sister bought the 250 and 1 month later traded for the 750 shadow, light machine not to bad and shorter. she said the 250 was to light and blew all over the road. my wife would get an 883 or 1200 sportster, its a small harley and thats the only reason. the 750 of my sisters rides better though. welcome

thanks ever so much for the responses.
Sledheaddude - that is a sharp looking ride, better then any of seen around here. The thought never even occurred to me that if you put street tires on it, it looks sharp and I certainly wouldn't want to go bush wacking then.

snow4mydooplz - nice to meet you. way cool avatar

I took a quick lesson today. Strangest thing, I thought the dirt bike's gears (many moons ago) were on the right so when I hoped on today, let's just say it didn't just come back to me :(
I didn't really have room to try to drive and I had a large laughing audience. I'm ticked that I didn't pick up on it quick, however instead of saying, well I don't want a bike, now I am more determined :( I really don't need another toy!
Can ya's talk me out of it :)

What's everyone's thoughts about an 87 Honda Shadow 500, candy apple red, only one owner, no accidents, for 2800 CAD. She only paid $3000 for it new many years ago. Only 24000 km.
It's HER selling HER bike that got me thinking, but I thought that price was a bit too high.
More input please

Thanks for the inputs and thoughts everyone. I'm glad everyone thought that was too much, that is what I said to. I watch auto trader every day. Guess my first step should be to call my insurance companyto see how much the will dig out of my pocket.
I still hope that when my new ride finally gets here, that I will forget about it. If not, maybe by October/November I will have found a great deal.

First off welcome to the site Gade girl. It is nice to see that you made the painless transition from guest to member, SWRules .

Can ya's talk me out of it smile.gif

I have owned ten bikes all but 2 of them being 2 strokes, :D . I had so many close calls when going through intersection as people would make a left in front of me. Nothing like having to pull a stoppie out of nowhere and skipping through the intersection towards them on your front tire. This was a few years ago and things have only gotten worse since then. It doesnt seem to matter how skilled the bike rider is as if u spend enough saddle time someone will get ya.

I ended up getting mine at a SLOW speed in a parking lot. A guy in a mercedes backed out of his parking spot while on his phone. Unfortunately i was behind him. His bumper hit directly on my Tibia and fibula. The bumper dented in good before my leg boke in many spots. He tried to run me over and get away but someone ran up to his car abnd grabbed him through the window. At that point in time my ankle was touching my knee. I had never broken or sprained anything so this was all NEW to me. I ended up in the hospital with a cast from my hip to my foot. It was so heavy I couldnt even move with it on. My leg ended up falling apart inside the cast making it impossible to move as the bone fragments were piercing the nerves in my leg . The had to go in and pound a metal rod from the top of me knee(inside the bone) all the way down to my ankle and then attach with screws there. My knees ended up blowing out too after all the stress on them. Eight operations later and i am somewhat fixed.

I stick to ATV's/sleds and offtrail stuff now. Oh and for the road I drive a 3/4 ton dodge ram turbo dieslel 4x4. From now on i will be the crusher and NOT the crushee. Already happened as a grand am hit me head on. I drove away after and he had to be towed as his wheels were no longer attached. :lmao:

That enough rambling for now later Perm

Welcome to the board.
Take a registered bike course and learn the basics on one of there bikes.
Learn from a pro.
You'll enjoy your first rides better because you'll have the basics down before you hit the streets.
The streets are way more dangerous that a sled trail to learn a new sport on. It'll also help save you the expense of replacing damaged parts on your bike if and when you get one.
It sounds like your not sure that you even want ride.
Maybe after you take the course you'll decide it's not for you.
If you doo decide to join the sport.
How about a nice learner bike like this 83 Honda 550 CBX.
I'll hold it till yah get your beginners Lic.
Start out with a small inexpensive bike.
I wouldn't recommend a new sledder buying an 800 and I don't recommend a new biker getting anything bigger that a 500. Opps! I mean a 550.

Welcome to SW Glade Girl and Garfield

I was going to get a Harley and did not.........
Then an Indian, but declined........
The Ducati was appealing, but not enough to pursued me......
Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda for a crotch rocket; then remembered how accident prone I am............

I decided on a Trek 21 speed mountain bike..........
My cardio-vascular system sent me a thank you card.........
The only problem I'm having is where you plug in the electric face shield

BTW: It is also great on gas

that interceptor is heavier and taller than the 750 shadow I was talking about. I do agree with the rider course. I would not buy a bike by the cc, get one that feel good to you. or be like my 'lil big sister that wasted 400 bucks riding a 250 for a month, lucky it was only 400 bucks. I don't remember who posted it, but it was about the bank and from 1 mile to 25, must have been a time limit huh? :lmao:

Wiping out on snow and pavement/gravel are two totally different worlds.

when was the last time you were on a trail lol? every other sled i met last year in a corner was in my lane wallbash.gif

If you are experiencing this with such frequency then maybe it is you that are on the wrong side of the trail. I can count on one hand the number of sleds i have met on my side of the corner.

I have over 100, 000 kliks of trail time without a single scratch to me or any major injury, as wiping out in SNOW is much nicer than on the road. Ask anyone who has ridden with me as i do NOT hold back either. On the roads people in cars are simply NOT looking for bikes.

BTW when quoting someone , if you use this format it is MUCH easier to decipher who is saying what.

Perm I agree with you, I love Bikes or anything that is remotely motor fun. But after loosing some one that was a friend by just the way you mentioned it makes me realize why I don't ride bikes, The first one was 32 years ago 17 years old 81 year old woman turned left in front of him no time for anything. The last one was almost identical only he was an experienced rider and that was this past Friday, we just came from the wake. The difference is control offroad you are in control on road you rely on others to be in control.

i hate hearing stories like this cuz i just bought a 2000 r6 this spring. ive got 8000km's on it since june. not quite enough but i ride it everyday. had a couple close calls that scared me but keep riding it as careful as possible.

i decided to go with a 600 for my first bike cuz i knew id want something different next year if i didnt get this bike. this way i can keep it for a few years and then sell it. tons of power (no torque) and the gas mileage is amazing. the more i ride my bike and the less i drive my truck the more money i save. a lot of people told me starting out on this bike was too much but IMO it's not the bike it's the rider. this bike is very rider friendly if u know how to use the power, if not it'll get you into trouble really fast.

IMO a really good bike for u would be a suzuki sv650. very cheap bikes to pick up and an all around good bike. very low maintenance bike, gas and go and rack up the miles.

Holy Pooh! I missed your post today when I visited the site. Ouch! Biker's worst enemy is always a motorist. I feel for ya.
Strange, we were just told that a friend of ours had a metal rod inserted just like you described. He hit loose gravel on a turn, put his leg down and the bike wacked it. He is very proud that he never dropped his new harley! I think I would prefer to wreck the bike rather then my leg.
I live in the country so I think I'd mostly use it to go to work. But more stories like this might work.

Bikes can be a so much fun. I have MANY great memories of times on them too. Riding on ein the country is a better idea with far fewer vehicles to watch out for, mainly just big furry ones :)

Awesome ride koolchic!!
please pm me what that sets you in insurance. I lwas looking at a used (much older) 500 Ninja just because it looked so nice, but hubby says NO you don't want that and everyone else says the insurance sky rockets when the word Ninja is in the title.
I still have The BUY A BIKE BUG, however it's not as bad. Think I will keep waiting for a good deal on an old 4 stroke. Insurance with State Farm is going to run me more then I thought :(
I am going to take a course (cause I'd rather drop their banged up bikes). Looks like it will be in the spring cause time is running out.
I see we sled the same stomping grounds. I'll pm you this winter when we head to the beach and maybe hook up for a ride,

general rule of thumb is if you can see the entire motor in a given bike it will cost about 1/2 of a same size bike where you cant see the motor(meaning it is covered by bodywork ) .for my bike it`s about $350 .for a same size sportbike with full bodywork it is $800-$1200 per year

Well, Jevco (and most other insurance companies) charge a 'sur-charge' on super-sports. In my case, Jevco adds 250% sur-charge.

That not the only crap thing about jevco as they fight every single claim to the end. I would advise a different company even if it was slightly more IMHO.

My girlfriend started on an 83 seca 750 after she took the motorcycle course. She says that is the best thing to do. She has been driving the 750 for the last three years and just now bought a 99 HD 883 sportster custom. I now get the 750 until i can afford a HD.
