Blew a headgasket last time we were riding it, so I think the heads are gone.. no biggie, but would that be the cause?

That, or, it wasn't torqued down right (heads)?

Bought it for 50 bucks, good spark, track.. general condition is good.. Heads will be a no brainer to find, neither should a headgasket..
Tiltson carb sucks balls though...

What do you think?

Not sure what you mean by "the heads will be gone". This is a two stroke engine so there are no moving parts in the heads. All they do is cover the cylinders, provide somewhere for combustion to occur and hold the spark plug in simple terms. It is possible one or both could be slightly warped.Try putting them on a piece of glass and check for straightness. If they are slightly warped you can lay a piece of sandpaper on the glass and work the cylinder head back and forth on the sandpaper until the paper is rubbing evenly across the machined area.Only do enough to get the heads straight or you will affect your compression....If everything looks good throw in some new gaskets, torque the heads properly in criss crosss fashion and check your fan belt to make sure the engine isn't overheating. Give her another try when the snow flies

Thanks!! Yeah, its the warping I'm wondering about.. but the guy never torqued the heads to spec or in a criss cross fashion...

How do I check the fan belt? As it stands, it isnt super tight, but do I have to check to see if the fans working at all when its running??

UPDATE: Got the sled, and took the heads off. The right one looks decent but I took two off another 340 which hasen't had them off before and they look ok. New gasket is comming soon (whats the torque specs??)..

Unless the cylinders are messed up I don't think I will see anymore head gasket blowing issues (the gaskets looked decent but it was blowing isht out the side of the heads, IIRC last time I saw it..) but I think this should be in. Next will be the hood and the throttle cable...

Anyone know the specs for torquing the head gasket? Also, some of hte studs came out.. how do I get them tight back in? Will they tighten up when I put the nuts on and torque everything back on???

Thanks, Steve

Some advice when buying parts for your sled. Ski-doo didn't make a 340 olympic in 71. The engines in 71&72 were 300, 335 (both single cylinders) and a 399 twin. Try to find out what your motor was out of before you buy parts that don't fit. :bash:
