Well I think it's time for me to start becoming more active on here and post some messages, being that the last time I logged on was April!
Anyways, what should the compression be for a '96 Cougar 550 Carb?
This is going to be a first engine rebuild for me so i guess it's a good thing that this is a spare sled...i'll be able to take my time and i won't be too upset if something goes wrong :sarcasm:

the compression on my 95 550 is about 120, yours should be 120-140 depending on elevation.. lower elevation will have higher compression, i'm at 4200 feet...

Here is a thread I posted about the Cougar's compression back in April
hope this helps. Later SD

At least we shouldn't have to worry about clutch springs flying around the garage!

Well, just did the test tonight thanks to sledheadude for the use of the compression gauge. 135 on the PTO side and 130 on the MAG side. So that's not the problem. I can't figure out why it won't develop power. It gets to about 45MPH, if you try to hit it any harder and blah, it sounds like its bogging down. The carbs are clean, jetting is correct, fuel pump is working fine, changed belts. I tore apart the clutches last year when this first happend and everthing seemed fine with them. The spark looks healthy. The only thing i can think of is that there could be a problem with the stator once the rpms start to get in the higher range???? what do you all think?

You may want to check to see if the clutches are shifting fully... take a felt marker and make a line from the center to the edge of both the primary and secondary; when you run it, the line will go away letting you know if it's fully shifting.
I would also check track tension... you may also have some frozen bearings in the rear skid... also check the brake to see if it's hanging...
When you put the spring back in the driven clutch, did you get it pre-wound? Something else to check... I wound one the wrong way one time and it would hardly move... easy to check.

I'm definately looking into the clutch shifing issue. As far as the rest of the things you mentioned, I made sure last season when I first started trying to diagnose the problem that those weren't the problem. When it all first started i was almost positive that the spring in the secondary was either getting weak or I had forgotten to wind it properly. So I went out and bought a new spring figuring what the heck, its old anyways, it couldn't hurt....didn't help, even after i tried changing the spring to the tighter adjustment hole didn't make any difference....
