hey, need opinions on a 1990 ford ranger 2.9l v-6 5-speed regular cab long box. it has 81,000kms, i havnt heard it run yet, but the motor looks very clean. it has bucket seats. just wondering what they look for in the body when they certify it? i know the cab cant have any holes but what about the box? the very bottom of the box on each side of the wheel wells has rusted so he cut the rust out, will it certify like that? it has newer tires on alloy rims and looks like the rear has been raised slightly.

how reliable are these trucks?? what are they like on gas?? are they powerful?? can i tow anything with it?? any opinions would be great. what would it be like on gas compared to my sunbird 3.1 auto??

thanks- Neil

btw he is asking $500 as is.

i have a 89 bronco ii with the 2.9 and 5 speed. it has 150,000 miles and still running strong. it has the power to bake the tires. a weak spot is the transfer case shift motor if its electric shift, they tend to burn out. Their hydrolic clutch just so you know when you go to see it. most of them make ticking noises but its common with the 2.9. And its common for the cruise control and abs to go to. the brake light usually stays lit on the dash.. Any questions ask me, i've done a lot of work with these trucks.

hey, thanks for the reply. well i purchased the truck, got it for $350. drove it home, cleaned the interior and the box out, checked the fluids, etc.... everything turned out OK.
runs good except there is a leak somewhere in the exhaust system by the manifold, or a crack in a pipe or something? anyway to get a closer look at the passenger side manifold??

also, you said its hydraluic clutch? how would i go about bleeding the system? the truck has 181,000Kms on the original clutch and it seems abit tired, or could there be air in the system? something worth checking out i think.

and yes i can squack the tires easily, has more power than i thought it did.

thanks for the reply and keep it coming.

The rangers are good little trucks..

i had a 97 ranger XL, and now that i got my new truck i miss the ranger because it was much cheaper on gas.

the only problem i had with the ranger was a vibration and a cuple of bad bearings.

do you have to keep filling the clutch resevoir? the slave cylinder might be leaking, their known to go on these. you can find a clutch on e-bay for like 60.00. if you replace the clutch make sure you do the slave cylinder too. a few good resources is therangerstation.com. or broncoii.org. you can find tons of info there.
