Just wondering how many accidents in your area are moose or deer related because here in newfoundland canada we have plenty, usually around 500 a year on the island, and being a paramedic i have been to alot of bad scenes with fatalities and been involved in a couple myself. We actually hit one in an ambulance a few months ago on route to a MVA out on the highway, so whats it like in your area and who has been involved in an accident due to big furry animals. Here in newfoundland and some other parts of canada its getting worse every year.

Around Apsley it's mostly deer/auto collisions, but I know of 2 moose/auto collisions.

I saw a documentary on the moose of Newfoundland a few weeks ago, very interesting.

There is a lot of deer here in iowa. *With harvest all set to start there will be very many deer out and about. *I personally have never hit one but if one drives around early morning or a dusk it is not uncommon to see the darn things by roadways.

Here in Wisconsin, the total car vs. deer last year was crazy. The numbers I heard were almost 50,000. Thats what happens when the total deer population exceeds one million for the state. I am doing my best to thin the herd. Bowhunting started last weekend *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/exclamation.gif

We definately have our share of them in ontario as well and it
gets worse the farther north you go.I've seen the most hit along hwy 17.I'm just waiting for more bears to start being hit as there population seems to be ever growing since our ever
nonintelligent government got rid of the spring bear hunt http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif I'de rather hit a moose or deer over a bear any day of the week.

I donno....bear isn't likely to fly through the windshield....Saskatchewan has its fair share of deer vs vehicles....

I was thinking in a truck vs bear situation as a high % involve
trucks to begin with.Bears tend to stay together getting in the
undercarriage and tearing off air lines and such while moose
and deer tend to come apart after impact if ya know what i mean. But i agree with you rocketman on not wanting to hit a big ol bull with a car or you just may have a convertible after http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif

I believe it or not hit one on my sled two years ago. Was almost stopped. Little crack in the hood and some hair in the skis. She got up and ran away. A lot of deer hit hear by cars and trucks also.

We have had 3 bears hit right around my house on the highway in the last 2 summers. One was a monster male over 500lbs. *I had a big mother and 2 cubs run in front of the dodge this summer. *My friend has hit three deer with his dodge ram before he finally got it fixed. BTW they changed the laws here a couple of years ago. Your allowed to keep them now. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif *We had the one little buck done in skewers marinated in port wine jelly and rosemary. *It was the best venison i have ever had http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I am the most unlucky person in the world.

I have hit 2 deer since March of this year.

1 on Highway 124 between Sundridge and Dunchurch only 1km from my cottage and the other was 2 weeks ago in Fenwick on my way to pick up some parts for my sled.

The second one was really bad and I was in a rental car. (2002 GMC Envoy). *My Grand Cherokee was stolen so they gave me the Envoy. *My insurance company has just raised my premium 15%.

OUCH

I thought I was safe on the second strike, I saw 2 does in the ditch and figured they were going to cross so I stopped and shut my lights off, sure enough 2 does and 2 fawns hopped across the road. *I started up again thinking they were passed and about 500 yards down the road a 3rd does jumped out, I swerved to miss her but the fawn that was behind here slammed right into the passenger door. *The dent was in the center of the door and perfectly round. *I tried to pull it with a dent puller so I wouldn't have to tell the rental company. * The dent came out perfect with no wrinkles at all but the paint came off in a big chunk about the size of a watermelon. *So much for not telling the rental company.

z800rtx trust me you wouldent want to hit a moose either, i mean the average moose is around 800 to 1500 lbs and they are so high on the legs which means when you hit them you hit there legs and they tumble onto your car and turn it into a convertable i have seen it too many times, so i would say if i was going to hit somthing let it be a bear because they are shorter, but i would perfer to not hit anything larger that a bumble bee when it comes right down to it, being in a truck will make it alot better also.

I hit adeer on my 91 ext back about ten years ago. That was rough, tore my sled up pretty good about $2,000 damage. I rode it like that the rest of the season with hair hanging in all the cracked fiberglass. Kevin

Used to live in Colebrook, NH where there were a lot of moose\deer accidents. *Moose are the worst to hit by far - their legs are so long that the body flips into the windshield of the car when you hit them.

One reason not to hit a moose. Here in Ontario about the only trucks I see w/ moose bars are Arnold Bros. out of Manitoba. I guess in Nfld they're pretty much mandatory.

I checked out that website a few times rev, to get facts and pics of moose, they can really do the damage to vehicles. *Actually the one we hit a while ago our machine was totaled and wrote off and it was a 99 Tri-star highrise ambulance. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif

One of our trucks hit a bull on 17 near schriber and it did around $25 grand in damage. It actually hit the drivers side
glass and crunched in the windshield frame to the door.Needless to say the others got moose bars after.

there you go z800rtx all the trucks here now have what we call the moose bars too, so when they hit em with a big load you turn them into hamburger meat and keep truckin, and just radio it in to the wildlife. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I was out on your rock a number of years ago jwheeler and we
did some fishing in a remote area and i've never seen so many
bears before.I can't remember the area as i was pretty young
but it was with my dad and our neighbour who is from your neck of the woods. The newfs are top notch people and it is
tough to find folks who are more friendly and good hosts http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

We, the wife and I, just bought a house very near where those pictures were taken. House sits about 100 yards off of I-93. Brought up and lived in deer country, but moose will be a new experience. I've had 2 accidents with deer over the years. I didn't hit them, they hit me. Both ran into side door. One on drivers side, other on passenger's side. One that hit drivers side, I never saw him coming until his head hit the drivers side window. Scared the crap out of me. You have got to be ever mindful of them and the damage they can do to you and your vehicle.
