Ok we got enough snow a couple nights ago to ride, so me and my dad went for a spin. I ride a moded ultra 680, its piped, jetted and ported, I also think that it has had some clutch work done. Its mainly set up for lake racing or snocross. I ride mainly trails. It is way to snotty for trails. Its ok in the 1/4 throttle range but when I go to 1/2 throttle it takes off like a bat out of hell, it goes this way and that way, and I almost ended up in the trees a few times. What I want to know is how can I adjust the powerband. If I changed the gearing would that help and if so would I change the upper or lower.

I want to make this sled pretty much stock, I don't care about performance loss, the sled as it is, is too much, and I don't have enough money to get another sled. I have the stock pipes to put on it but I need to know the stock jet sizes for the carbs, the only book I can find is the polaris shop manual and its over $100.00 and I don't have it. I just want to mellow it out some. anything would be very appreciated.
Thanks

Well first off gearing will do a number of things. If you lower the teeth on the gears it will have a quicker acceleration. Raise it and your top speed will be higher with slower accel. I dont think you wana mess with gearing to solve your problems. The pipes are the problem. That is obviously an easy change, but.... the sled most likely had clutch work done to accomodate the pipes. So your going to have to go back to stock clutching. All of this information will be available by a polaris dealer. Call them and just order the stock jets for the carb and the springs and helix. It may be cheaper to go through an aftermarket supplier like EPI or SLP to get the clutching parts. But if you wana make it easier just call the dealer and order the parts

Should I change both the springs? Also the helix I know its a 36 degree but I was looking for one and they heve 2 numbers like 40/36, 45/36, 50/36 ect. whats the difference? Also with the jets the ones in there are 400 on the pto and mag and 410 in the center, stock pilots and stock needle. the cylinders are ported and the stock jets are 350, would I want to go one size higher to make it more rich for the porting or would the stock ones be ok?

well for the helix the two numbers mean that it is a progressive angle helix, not just one straight angle, it starts at say 42 and ends at a 38. I would replace both springs if I were you. They tend to loose their "punch" after a while. Just set everything stock. The stock jetting is known to be quite rich anyway so you shouldnt have much of a problem with mild porting on stock jets. If you want to go one size up that up to you.

Should I keep all three cylinders stock or go a lil richer on the center cylinder?

Hey I here them red powerbands work pretty good! lol just teasing. It sounds like you need to change your clutching. Get more of a trail type setup.
