Im new to snowmobiling and am buying a sled which has a brand new track but is not studded. Living on a lake i know studs are going to be important for my traction. I want to know what is the best way to put them in.. Do i need to take the track off to do this or can i do it with the track on? What is a good pattern to use for mainly lake sledding but some trail riding? Any help is appreciated...

You are first going to have to let us know what sled you have, the length of track, the lug height, your inteneded use (aggresive riding for example) and power of sled.

Either way, more studs are necessary when riding aggresive, and you want as many studs, if not all in the center of the track. Best way is to go buy a template, mark your holes, drill em, then stud the machine while the track is on the machine. You dont have to de-tension it or anything, but taking the drive belt is good to do as you will be turning the track.

Studs can be installed without removing the track. The best I found was to raise the back of the sled off the ground and remove the snow flap to allow easy access for drilling, etc.

As for stud patterns, decide on length of stud and how many, generally one stud per horsepower, depending on your aggressiveness.

A good website to start and read up on studding info is at Woody's traction. Here's the link: http://www.woodystraction.com/home.aspx

Oh yeah, welcome to SW.

Probably the easiest way I have done it is in the back of a pickup truck(tail gate makes a great work bench and seat :) .I put a block on either side of the running boards to hold the track off of the ground and removed the snowflap(I had to remove it to install tunnel protectors anyway.).Then I just turned the track and marked the pattern on the track with a paint marker.Once I was satisfied I had the pattern correct I drilled the holes and installed the studs. An air tool or drill with a socket is a big help to tighten up the nuts.Just don't over tighten them.

the fastest and easiest way will always be "have the dealer do it for you",,,, it WONT be the cheapest though. I do mine just like mentioned above, I lift the rear, pull the snow flap, pull out the air gun, template, white out pen, and just go to town,,,, I usually mark and drill 3 lugs at a time, (finishing the entire track),,, then I start installing them. You will get faster at it after youve done a couple of tracks,,,,
Woody's does have an excellent site to get you started.

I did it for the first time a few weeks ago, just like they mention to my wife's sled. She's got a Doo Legend 500ss, I put on 144 studs. It went good.
