: Need Easier Pull Recoil For '95 Mach 1 670

Newbie here, just bought a '95 Mach 1 670 and '94 Formula 583 off Ebay. Both sleds are in great shape, and the price was a steal (about $900 each). The 670 also has a M-10 suspension on the rear. The 670 is a bear to pull over though. Searching the archives I learned they are known for this and the fix is to get a later model recoil starter with the larger pulley. What year/model will work?

Any recommendations on what to do, if anything, to these sleds? Or are they best left stock?

TIA.

Hopefully Thumbdoctor will chime in. I think I heard something from the 98 MXZ 670 has the larger pulley? Am I close Doc?

There is a larger diameter pull start and adaptor available from Doo. You can find a cheap one through seaching ultralite forums and Ebay. When an electric starter is installed on an Aero Rotax, the large diameter pull starter has to be deleted so there are plenty to be found.

Well, no luck finding a used large diameter pull starter on Ebay or any ultralite forums. :(
But the GPL electric starters they are using look darn nice, but $570 OUCH!

If I can't find one used, a Doo dealer should know what I'm talking about (the larger diameter pull start and adaptor kit)? I went to one today and he just started naming prices of starters off later model 670's. Do you know any part #'s or model years so I can make sure this guy orders the right part? Any idea on the price?

The 98 and up 670s had the larger recoils on them, however I do not think they will bolt right on. Maybe keep your eye on Ebay for a e start kit ? Doo had and E start option on the 670 Mach I believe.. I am pretty sure as they had E start on the grand touring with the 670 in it from them years.

Why wouldn't it bolt on? The 670 really didn't change over the years (except the HO version, but the case was the same), did it? With the snow on its way, I want to get something on there ASAP, as I am a wuss and can barely crank the thing over the way it sits now. Won't make for a very fun winter. :(

So, based on the pic it appears it is not a complete unit, but just the pulley. I assume I will need to dissamble mine and use my original recoil parts.

The 670s got the bigger recoil in 1997..After mine broke in the middle I could not buy a replacement from the dealer so I had to update to a different plastic style housing...It came with its own installation kit as it was a little different than the original. The original had a band that tightened around the outside edge to hold it on and tightened up with one bolt.

That kit listed by thumbdoctor is just like the original 97 starter.I was told it was no longer available by my dealer. The updated plastic version comes with a new aluminium piece that bolts on to the end of the cases and then the plastic recoil bolts directly to that piece of aluminium instead of using the clamp around the outside edge.
