I personally haven't done it but my buddy has done 2 or 3 of his own tracks and he just uses a utility knife. He said it does take awhile though. But he has only removed about a quarter inch, your removing a little more so not sure how easy it would be with the knife.

Sorry I just reread your post and your not removing that much. I thought it was more. My bad.

I welded up a metal jig that goes on both sides of the lug and is made for the right height of lug you want to cut. I then use a sawsall to cut off excess lug using jig for an idiotproof guide, this way all lugs are same and balanced, if I had high speed I would send pic of jig.

Using a jig sounds like a good idea. I used a hand held wood planer blade to remove some knobbies off my ATV tires. It cut them off clean without any effort. Like a hot knife through butter. I Just took the blade out of the planer and taped one end up real good to use as a handle.

He wanted to use shorter studs for less rotating mass. Sounds trivial but he used his trail sled in local drag races and won most of the time so I guess he was on to something.
