: 1996 Mxz 583
tdawg99 12-08-2005, 08:52 AM Greetings all!!
I recently acquired a 96 MXZ 583 and decided to redo the skid and track before the season kicks in. I opted for a Camoplast Iceclaw track which has a 1" lug. I didn't think this would be to big a jump in size but when setting it up, I noticed that there is almost no room at all between the tunnel and the track. (The stock .88 must have been close as it was). Has anyone on this forum done a track upgrade on that model and if so, how did you correct this issue. As far as I can tell, my options are either smaller carrier wheels on the upper idler assembly or drill new holes 1/2" or so below the current mounting holes for it. I prefer the wheel option but my local Bombardier dealer says that the ones on there are the smallest available. (100 mm).
If anyone has any sugestions, I would greatly appreciate your input.
Thanks in advance.

i installed a 1 inch on my FZ last year, no issues what so ever not studded, however, if ur gonna be runnning studs then ur gonna have some problems with teh studs hitting the front bulkhead...

I checked the bulkhead clearance and that looks good....the problem seems limited to the top of the tunnel.
97mach1 12-12-2005, 08:52 AM Put your suspension in the mounting holes that are farther away from the heat exchangers. If the holes are not drilled out already, you can probably see them if you drop the track down and look inside the tunnel.
I would definately use those holes with your track configuration.
I haev a 95 SS with an SC-10 and this year I put on a 1" Camo track with studs. Nothing really had to be done but I put in 1" tunnel protectors and I had to move one of the cross shafts down to get clearance on the top. Whoever put the upgraded suspension in put this shaft wayyyy to close to the heat exchanger even for the old track.
No problems yet :) I have to tighten it up a bit still. We tightened it up and spun the track, but when it was installed, there was no snow. Now that we have had some snow and I got some riding in, I think I heard some racheting.

it seems tight, but i ran it with studs last year for about 500 miles and never hit the heat exchangers once, i just got the odd scratch in the front bulkhead every now and then, usualy when going WOT on the lakes or riding pow and hitting it hard on the thottle. so i just said the hell with the studs and took them out, 1500miles and no problems after that. if i remember correctly, i lowered the top cross shaft. that's it, everyhting else went right back where it was

Thanks for the ideas...the more input the better.
I looked around for some smaller idlers for that top carrier assembly but couldn't find any that would work. Bombardier's smallest wheel is 100mm and the stock one is 110mm so that doesn't make enough difference. Royal Distributing has a 3.25" wheel but it's too wide for where it has to run. Looks like I'll be moving the top carrier down about 3/4" and then install some tunnel protectors. All I need now is snow!!

I just ended up taking out the top carrier wheels and axle entirely and had no problems whatsoever.
I did not, however install taller tunnel protectors, left them stock. Mistake! My exchanger is now damaged from the studs, no punctures though.
