I just got this sled and dont know anything about them to speak of I rode them as a kid but never owned one worked on them or maintained one so as you can guess I will have alot of questions lol first is why is this sled so slow averages 20 to 25 mph in the feild and maybe 30 to 35 on the road I put new plugs in it and it starst easy does a great burn out then just seems to stop off at 20 or so I have been mixing the gas at 50 to 1 is that right? how full do you fill the chain drive and with what weight oil? and any other helpfull tips would be great.

thanks

Could be a few things as to why it is slow. First, how clean are the clutches? They need to be kept clean. If they are dirty, they can bind and may not shift properly. Second, is how is it running? A dirty carb may reduce its power, and prevent it from performing properly. How tight is the track? A tight track takes more power to turn, slowing down the machine. Also what kind of condition are the slides in? If they are worn or you were riding in low snow conditions, it will reduce the speed somewhat. Also, I'm not familiar with that machine, but what size is the motor? If it is a small motor with a heavy load on it, then it will reduce the speed significantly.

As to the chain case, normally they hold 8oz of oil. They sell chaincase specific oil at sled dealers and such, but other fluids are suitable as well. Motor oil, gear oil, and ATF will all work.

the sled starts easy and idles fine takes off like a bat out of he@# then seems to just stop off around 20 to 25 I dont know anything about tighting or loosening the track the cluches look clean and seem to work good as far as I can tell it has a 377 or 397 cc motor on it single carb the slides on the skis are worn and could need replaced but even with the track raised off the ground it will only reach 40 on the speedodmeter and you have to feather the gas to get it there I am totally in the dark when it comes to sleds more of a motorcycle guy being I live in southeren Indiana and only get to ride a snowmobile once or twice a year down here.

Sounds like either the clutches aren't fully shifting or it has been regeared for low speed pulling power only. Try taking a felt marker, putting a line on both clutches, going for a ride and seeing if the lines are completely worn off. That will tell you if the clutches are shifting out fully or not. As to the gearing, you'll have to open the chaincase to confirm that.

after doing some work new plugs gapped right and sealing up an air leak I have been able to get it doing 40 once or twice on the road may have gone faster but I live in town and there isnt much snow left mostly ice and was worried about on comming traffic and got it to do 60 with the track lifted off the ground I messed with the carb some took it off and sprayed it out real good with carb cleaner but I still cant get it to run full throttle it bogs and looses speed it will run good at about 3/4 of the way open, the track seems to have 2 to 3 inches of slack in it and turns easy by hand. the clutches look to be ingaging fully I didnt do the marker thing but I did watch them while I had it running with the track raised. the small one goes almost closed and the big one spreads out wide. I would have never thought to look at the gearing on the chain drive to see how it was set up.

could be a small thing, but honestly that sled probably isnt much faster than 60 anyway I would say

Maybe could be bad carb jettings or adjustment??? It might be running lean or rich because of the bad jettings. I had a Sno-Runner that had a high speed and low speed adjustment and it wouldn't go at all on top end so I would have to play around with the high speed jetting until I could get it to open up.

I am going to try adjusting the jetting next chance I get to work on it.

Next time you have it out , find yourself some room to let her go all the way , hit the kill switch with your hand still on the flapper and come to a stop , check your plug colours , Brownish GOOD , BLACK motor running rich , WHITISH BAD too lean . Good luck
