: A Stupid Question.....
Mr. Samurai 12-13-2005, 11:55 AM Ok my friend just got two old sleds that generly run like there is no tomorow and haull a$$ but the one, when you get on the gas it hits about 30 and stays pined for a second then it starts to shift and takes off like a rocket but how can we make it not stop at 30 mph (without spending money) And now for the stupid questions. We got the sleds for free and they run and we like to screw around so the first stupid question is how do you get a old (but powerful) 440 ski-doo to pop a wheelie? It just spins on everything! The other is, my friend has heard of people being able to drive across rivers and stuff but has never seen it. How fast do you have to go and where should you put your butt? I know you guys are going to want to say don't try these things but we are going to probably try them any way so some guidnce would be helpful. Thanks

rvanderklok 12-13-2005, 12:10 PM you need 50 km/ph to run open water. I would highly reccomend running water in a controlled environment (VERY shallow water). Running a 1 foot deep creek, or the shoreline of a beach etc. DO NOT run deep water, as anything can happen with the machine. The engine could blow, stall, or some other freak thing, and you'll drown. If your track is spinning on snow, and not grabbing enough for the skis to come up, then you probably don't have enough paddles to run open water. But you could probably still "puddle jump". To get the skis to come up, you can remove the front torsion strap inside the undercarriage. HOWEVER, doing this will make you sink in open water. Also, get yourselves floatation suits if you're running open water.
Do yourselves and all of us a favor.....if you're going to run water, make sure it is only a foot deep. Most of the videos you see, are only done on SHALLOW water, not even deep enough to come over the handlebars. Download and watch the movie in this thread.....near the end you'll see sleds that are built to run open water, and when the sleds sink, you'll see how shallow they're running, even with a $12000 machine.

Open water is fun.....but BE SAFE and BE SMART about it! STAY SHALLOW!
P.S. The ladies won't find you very attractive if you come up in the springtime, half decomposed and bloated....
Mr. Samurai 12-13-2005, 12:28 PM Ok got ya. We was planing on puting a rope on the pull bar when we run it across the watter just in case. As for the front suspension..... both ski shock are blown or verry weak. Can't complain for free though. Thaks, belive it or not seafty is alwasy in mind when we ride.
TimberPig 12-13-2005, 01:46 PM Try cleaning out the clutches and looking for worn parts. Sounds like they are dirty or worn, and are binding up, then letting go, hence the sticky spot in the shifting.
As to trying to wheelie the sled, try standing at the back of the running boards, and shifting your weight back as you punch the throttle. It should get it to lift even with the short lugged track.

Sleds they have are probably bogie wheel suspended with a 440 fan...make a wheeli...haha. run water...like a rock.
Mr. Samurai 12-13-2005, 03:09 PM Ok thanks, I will do what I can. If I get any good wheelies, I'll post them.
Yamahammer 12-13-2005, 10:57 PM As a project which iv been doing on the side for a while, fixed up an old Elan 248 twin, got her running almost mint with the excpetion for the #@$#% Kimpex parts that are on it which requires a constant trips to canadian tire with the reciept for a return. Well, got that thing to wheelie, like a champ I might add. I might also add that I hate tillotson carbs.
Then with the 3" stainless steel 90 degree pipe coming right from the Y pipe added some power for sure, power you can feel, and hear, hahaa. Wheelies like a madman, almost wheelied over a few times until the back end hit the custom hitch. Going to get some video soon.
Bogey wheel suspension not wheelying, HAA, they wheelie!
Waiting for some water like puddles that form on the golf course when water will not seep into the ground to run water, and if the Elan does, well, im sure the 44O will
gade girl 12-13-2005, 11:01 PM What's the secret for scoring free sleds! Operational and free hmmmmmmm ??
Yamahammer 12-13-2005, 11:03 PM Also, rules of water,
Stand not sit, sitting makes the sled go A$$ heavy for some reason.
It is not as easy as it might seem to wheelie on water, try it if you want but nothing ususally happens.
Nothing is funnier than your friend who is "large" running water on a 600 pantera coming off of some cow path trying to get a run for water, then seeing them rip right across it. AMAZING. Had to change the pantaloons after that one..
I think if your just going to run a super short stretch of water, run it at 50 at least, but if you ant to keep er going, then you better be going more like 70kmh. Me, I go into er barred, and have ran water doing just around 70 before and that was 30 ft
underdog 12-14-2005, 12:17 AM Well I have to say this sounds like a Sled Ed move in the making . Sledding is a great sport . If you are gonna run water were a floatation suit, Hell even a life jacket will help . We don't need to lose a member of the SW family . I have experience going into deep unfamiliar water with a sled, at night . 583 with no studs , no traction for last minute speed increase , breaking ice underneath you , and nothing but black water infront of you . Sinking feeling does not even start to explain the feeling of sheer panic. Please make sure you play at least safe while doing your adventures in water. As for a ski stand , most will agree soften the rear suspension ,and studs for traction , but studs are an expensive add on . Have fun keep it safe , and where do I get a free sled .lol

Wheeling on water is easy. You just need to start at the edge of the ice and punch it. The front end will rise up and out of the water, and you'll wheelie right across.
Same thing for the speed. THe less power you have, the higher your speed should be when you hit the water. With 90 hp if you hit it at 60kph you can maintain your speed and just keep going, not worries, but 40 kph is plenty for crossing most stretchs.
With a bit more power, as I said, you can stick your ski tips over the edge of the ice and punch it from a dead stop. You'll accelerate away, and keep going.
Do yourself a favor and call the local fire dept before you go. That way they can set up a pratice/real life water rescue. If not doing that take a small boat with you guys so you can rescue the other one.
Idooski brought up a good point when I was talking about doing the water thing and that is that when you nail it and head across the track is going 120mph and the sled is doing 40. When you get to the other side the sled is going to hit ground and do 120 and you are going to still be doing 40.
Keep your little sleds running as well as your hearts and avoid some of the stupidity.
I think you guys meant you wanted to rock wheelies on ground and not water. Don't play with wheelies on water until you make sure you can even make it across. Personaly I would not even think of trying it if I did not have a sled that is 100%.
Good luck and call your family and tell them you love them before you go.
flamebowi 12-14-2005, 05:29 PM Of course you can wheelie on water with an sks.... look at the lugs on those things. Longer track and deeper lug= more traction on water= wheelie
