I was fiddling around with my sled the other night just playing around with my ignition doing some testing, when i relized how the ignition switch is set up and that i don't even need to have it plugged in to steel my sled all I have to do is unplug the connector and the same thing with the tether. So to steel my ski-doo i know for a fact that all i have to do is diconnect the ignition and tether. Now i was wondering if any of you out there have wired up a switch. If so where?? Power to the coils, the kill switch, CDI what would be the best, also a good location for the switch to be hidden/protected.

Newer ski-doos have an electronic coded tether. If you use a different tether, it will start, but not run over 3000 rpm. To get the computer switched to a new tether, you have to take it to a dealer, and have them hook up the special mpem computer programmer thingey...
The easiest way to keep your sled from getting stolen? Buy a polaris. I used to have one I would leave the keys in every place I went, just hoping, but I guess the criminals are getting smarter these days.

If you're really worried about it, pull one of the plug wires or something.

You could wire in a hidden on/off switch.

Putting it away somewhere secure is the easiest way to prevent theft. Next would be a hidden kill switch. You can also close the ground electrodes on a set of spark plugs and put them in before leaving it, but then when you go to ride it you have to troubleshoot why it won't start after you forgot the plugs aren't sparking.

Just throw a Polaris or AC cover over it :lmao:

the older sleds did that unplug the harness and it will start. but if i remember right the headlight will not work.

so if you see a guy going like a bat out of hell no lights on YOU KNOW HE STOLE IT. :cussing: :sly:

A hidden fuel shut-off will help.

It shouldn't have any affect on the headlight. Normally all the key does is open or close a ground, breaking the circuit to the CDI.

Personally.....I was thinking the Doo cover would do the trick.....

so 9 responses and the best one was the fuel shut off??! I like the cover idea but thats gonna kinda be hard to take to the bar and the rides i go on cuz i go for like 8 hrs out and then have to go back. I do keep it in a garage when im not out, but im still thinking about a good spot so i that it is hidden but not to in-accessible and that ill have to pop my hood every time i go to start my sled.

sludgemagnet had a good one in the stolen forum

"modify" a spark plug and put it in when you leave the sled. Let his arm fall off.

I dont know about you guys, but i find sleds get stolen here even if they can't get them started... its far to easy to grab a couple guys and throw it in a trailer or the back of a truck. were not talking 2 ton machines here... best way iv found to keep from it getting stolen, chain it to somethin big and heavy... and take the keys (if its an Mpem or newer sled) older ones are too easy to hot wire but the mpem needs a coded key that i think is pretty hard to bypass or fake

4 or 5 years ago my wife and I were staying at a motel in Midland, Ont. Around 3AM we woke to the sound of a sled starting. I knew right away it was my Mach Z. Fortunately the losers didn't know how to use a primer and couldnt get my wifes sled started - ran outside in my underwear and chased them away. Cops ended up catching them all - rule #1 dont try to steal anything after a fresh snowfall because your tracks are easy to follow.

Right after that episode I installed hidden kill switches on both sleds, wired in series with the existing kill switch. On her 98 MXZ 500 I taped it into the main harness that runs along side the oil reservoir. You couldn't see it unless you were looking for it. Just remember that once your buddies know about it they will flip it on you when you aren't looking and you will pull your nuts off trying to start the thing a time or two.........

I just wired an "on/off" switch onto the main power wire going to my CDI box.

By the way.......that's a nice necklace in that avatar pic......

i use a track lock because most of the time they don't ride them away.

Just wire up a block of C4 to the ignition and then unhook it before you ride. That way anyone that rides your sled but you gets blown up. A hidden fuel shutoff works better and it is not illegal. When the carbs are empty, the sled will quit. Doesn't work if they steal your whole trailer though.

You should just get lojac for your sled or remote starter for it therefore you would be set if someone does steal it cuz you could find it pretty easy!

What Paul means is alot of the sleds being stolen, depending on your area , are being thrown in the back of pick-ups off your front lawn , or beside your house now. Sometimes trailler and all.

SO HOW IS A TRACK LOCK GOING TO HELP IF THEY THROW THEM IN THE BACK OF A TRUCK.

Good question ?... Paul . lol . I would figure it is like anything , if they want it bad enough , they will get it unfortunately. There was a sled in our area just reported stolen the other day , it had a cable chain run through the track , and around a tree . The a-hole thiefs just cut it , and took off. I have a hidden kill switch . I have also pulled fuel lines off the carb. before if it is gonna sit to long anywhere. But make sure to turn off the fuel . lol. I've also pulled the belt off before , and took the spare into the restrants with me before, one in each arm of the jacket i was wearing . Make it as tough as possible is the best intervention against sled theft. Chances are they aren't gonna stick around to long to try to figure out what all you have done .

A single poll on and off switch worked great for all my older sleds. The kill switch wire should run down the handle bar. Just inside the hood on the frame was where I put mine. Paint it the same color as the frame and they will never see it. Good Luck

be careful with altering spark plugs and with pulling plug wires,,,, the cdi needs the resistance of the plug,,, without that, there is a chance you could damage (if not ruin) your cdi,,,

On my '98 MXZ I installed a fuel shut off on the RH stirrup. I then drilled a hole in the bracket to accept a padlock. I simply shut off the valve and pull the padlock through the hole. The 2 hoses are fastened to the valve with fuel injection type crimp clamps. Total investment about $25.00.
