Guys, I was having an issue with no power, and missing in the midrange with my 377 rotax. I pulled the engine, and inspected the points, and found them very worn. I went out and got a set of condenser's and a set of points, and tryed installing them. For the points, I slowly turned the crank until the points opened, and gapped them at .016 when in the open position. I soldered new condenser's in, but had to use a bit more solder than i like due to the fact that it wouldn't bond. Put it all back together, and IT RUNS LIKE A PIECE OF CRAP. It's popping and missing, and farting, it's doing everything but run right. Can someone please fill me in if it sounds like i did anything wrong. Well I obviously did something wrong. The only thing I can think of is that the first condense i tried putting in, I tapped it, and stupidly tapped in on the surface that you solder too, I noticed it was a bit loose following that. The second condenser i tapped in with a socket that would distribute the weight around the outside edge. Is it possible i wrecked the first condenser??

Any info would be great guys, I'm fuming here, just pulled and put the motor back in, now this!!!

Hi,

One thing it might be is ignition timing. I had a 292 single cylinder Rotax that had the same symptoms. In that case, the flywheel key was ever so slightly sheared, thus changing the timing and causing it to miss and backfire throught the carbureter. The key looked like an offset key but it wasn't supposed to be. It doesn't take much out of spec timing to cause these symptoms.

Good Luck

Tom

Could be timing like AzCats said. Any time you change the point gap the timing changes. So obviously if you change points you need to re-time it. Also, did you get genuine Rotax or Bosch points or aftermarket? Aftermarket points are generally junk. Sometimes they work, sometimes not.

Some of the things that I have read over the years is that condensers have a limited life span. I.E. they go bad if used or not.
Is yours new or old stock?
