if the track is in great shape but the studs are shot, will it hurt to take the studs out?? get rid of the weight.

No it won't hurt, just a tip, take 4 inches off of your broom handle and drill a 1/4" hole in the one end and use this to put over the end of stud and push through once nut is removed. Sure saves your fingers.

And a pair of bolt cutters to break the nuts saves tons of time.

Great tip about the broom handle.

i've taken lots out and just unbolted them without any special tools. never had any where you would have to push so hard that the need for any special tool to help with them.

Spray the nuts with WD-40 first, or a penetrating lube, then get a friend to hold an allen wrench under the studs and just ratchet the nut off, which is alot like they way you would install studs except with the studs coming out, than in.

Doing it this way didnt take long for me and a friend, maybe just over an hour for around 100 studs.
