I am a little concerned if i am using oil or not on my oil injected 89 wildcat.

I haven't seen my oil level drop yet, however I only have 15 miles on it.

Is there a way to tell if I am using it?

How many miles do you usually get out of a qt of injection oil?

does the sled smoke at all.? make sure the oil pump is working its hooked to a cable on the throttle se if the lever on the oil pump is moving. what colour are the plugs.

if you are just going by the tank it might take more than 15km before it starts to go down.

Check the condition of the oil injection pump cable, make sure that the hash marks are aligned at idle and full throttle. Mark the oil tank, premix the fuel tank, and ride it, ride it, ride it.

Check oil level tank mark after you burn a full tank of gas. You'll probably burn about 20 ounces of oil to a tank of gas. Give or take.

let the sled idle for a couple of minutes. Move the sled forward. if there's a black spot in the snow from your exhaust, then your oil injection is working. Then, take the sled out and open it up or at least get up some descent RPM's. While you're cruising, hit the kill switch. when the sled stops, remove the spark plugs and look at the color. If they're white, you're not getting enough oil, if they're black, you're getting too much, if they're a tan color, you're oil injection is working good. This is best to do with newer or clean plugs.
I know that with my Yamaha, the dealer told me not to worry about my oil injection, and that there are many sleds with over 20000 km's still running strong off the original oil injection. However, this is Yamaha......they invented oil injection on 2 stroke engines. I'm not sure what the quality is of the Arctic Cat oil injection system. Call the local dealer and ask them how often you should get the oil injection system serviced, and see what they say.

My Yamaha 485cc fan twin carb doesn't go through much oil at all. Since filling the jug at the beginning of the season, I've put 160 km on the machine, and that's running low to moderate speeds, opening up the sled a couple of times on lakes, and today, I added about 1/2 qt to top off the oil. I've probably burnt about 35 litres of gas, but like I said.....there wasn't much hard riding.

I'd premix a tank and do as suggested earlier.

As Rvanderklok was saying, some sleds use very little oil. I filled my Phazer oil tank to the top, drove for 80 kms, and it had used very very little oil. I could probably go through 3 or 4 tanks of gas and still have half a tank of oil left.

Not so sure about this advice. Black spot in the snow from idling means your injection is working? Don't think I'd use this example as an accurate means.

I've never heard of anyone reading plugs to gauge their oil injection rate either, rather an inaccurate way at best, more for reading carb jetting.

Just follow the other advise, pre-mix in the fuel tank, mark the oil reservoir and ride.

Honestly, this is real easy.

As I posted above, just quickly check the condition of the oil injection cable/assembly and hash marks (at min & max). Mark the oil reservoir level, premix the fuel in the tank and ride it. Burn a full tank of gas.

Simple math will tell you that you should be using around 20 ounces per fuel tank. If you are even in the ballmark, good enough. If not, further investigation may be in order.

I am not so sure about the plug or oil spot test either. You could simply be overjetted while believing your oil injection is spot on (even if it is running really low on oil).

Again though, just my opinion.
