OK. *I have heard that some machines come with stats and others dont. *Some people said my MachZ 01 doest come with a stat. *

First off I would personnally like to know if 01 Machs come with stats?

But lets have a discussion and hear some opinions as to why skidoo would take them out, and what does a stat do for your engine.

I have heard and also posted last year that a tstat would keep your engine running cooler and keep the temp more stable. *Is this wrong or Right.

Thanks

I know that in some engine applications a thermostat helps the engine warm up quicker by closing circuit to rad or heat exchanger and recirculating coolant only through engine. This could be an asset on those very cold mornings, waiting for sled to warm up.

A thermostat that is operating correctly only controls the
minimum operating temp. The are several others that determine
the rest i.e. ambient temp, snow conditions etc.I do *not no
for sure if your mach has a stat or not so i won't guess.I know
that my o1 800 mxz has one as the new one installed with the
piston update kit was defective(came apart) and resulted in me having to be towed out of the bush http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

Unless the sled is designed to run without the use of a thermostat, most will run hot and eventually overheat.

For a cooling system designed to use a thermostat, the stat becomes an integrated part of that system. This means that the cooling system was designed with the restriction of the thermostat. Removing the stat will remove the restriction which will increase the velocity of the coolant through the system.

Under the right cooling circumstances, the coolant velocity will be fast enough that movement through the heat exchangers will be too fast, not allowing enough time for proper thermal transfer. If these conditions last long enough, the engine will eventually overheat.

Once the engine overheats, detonation will soon follow if the load isn't reduced. After a few episodes of detonation, the engine will seize.

Most of this happens well before the idiot light comes on.

Don't believe it? Try it. It does happen...

Hey Nice Dancing Penguin Corey.

I don't know if my Grand Touring 700 has a stat or not, but anytime I'm running in slow area, I run way hotter than I want to. *In fact last year, when following a slow pack, who wouldn't let me pass, my idiot light came on.

What else can I do, to keep things cooler?

Yeah, *I have the same problem. *Im trying to get better cooling when riding slower with other people in margenal conditions. * Seems like anything over 600 cc from skidoo is hard to keep cool when going slow.

I added some Redline Water Wetter last year. *I think it helped a bit, but not enough.

Maybe someone else has some tips for us guys, when were forced to go slow.

Why would it make a difference by the size of the engine? All you need is a bit of snow to keep it cool. What are you riding on? Glare ice?

Machzzzz1, check www.hlsm.com *They have the parts manuals online.

According to the site revrnd posted 1998 was the last year for thermostats in the Mach Z. 1999 and above didnt have them.

So i guess the question is, what happens if i put a tstat in. *Will it run cooler, hotter, or same with just faster warmup?

Why did skidoo chuck the thermostat.

I was the one who started a similar thread about this subject last spring after almost burning my sled up.
I was going thru my 2000 repair manual looking for a 'why' on this, but it said nothing whatsoever about the stat, it only showed a blowup of the head and cylinders and where the stat should be but nothing their but an o-ring and washer[which is what is in place of the stat].
I agree 100% with what Corey is saying, the water just goes thru to damm fast without it. I have know idea what Skidoo is thinking! The CK-3 chassie is basically the same since 98 so why are 99 and up no stat? All the previous triples had a stat, some say the way the coolant flows is what it is? What difference does it make if the coolant flows clockwise or counterclockwise, it still has the same job to do.
All I know is, from first hand experience, is my 800[first time last year] ran a good 1/4" farther up the gauge than ANY other of my triples[how much in temp I dont know] and it got REAL warm putting around or anything under 30 mph so I installed a stat @ $35.00 and the problem was solved!!
Now it runs down where it belongs and stays there, only getting warm when it really should. Someone else also mention that they were running to cold and siezing[ya right] if that proves to be a problem this winter I will simply shut the vents off. On the rare occasions that I have seen the temp needle way down[on my other triples]was on 25 below nights at 90 mph but never did close the vents and never cold siezed either.
So from my personal experience, BUY A STAT!!!!!! It works for me.

So just walk into skidoo dealer and ask for a tstat for a 98 machZ 809 triple? *Is it the same one..

They told me Doo's are all the same [size and temp].

This post had me thinking so I asked my buddies at work(we all ride doos) and the guy with the 98 mach1 reminded me that he is the only one that is cool when the rest of us have to get going or stop when stuck behind slower riders my mach1(not mine then) is a 99 and we also have a 2000 mach 1 and z *so the stat must help http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/exclamation.gif

If you pull the stat you need to make a restrictor plate with a small hole in it. By eyeballing the stat you can guestimate the hole size you need. We did this on race trucks in the desert to eliminate just one more failure, it worked, complete removal didn't. I leave em in my sled as cold seizures are a reality. The hot running at part throttle running is more of a jetting, timing and clutching issue.

I agree 100% that you need to restrict the coolant to get the heat to soak into the water and out off it in the coolers.to make the restricter just gut a stat and put in the ring.

This just in from skidoo..

Thank you for contacting Bombardier Recreational Products. After speaking with our technical specialist, the termostats after a certain year and for certain models were no longer needed because of design modifications and improvements. If you do not have one on your model, then we do not recommend you adding one to it.

Trusting this information is to your satisfaction. Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information. It will be our pleasure to look into any future requests.

Sincerely,

For the guys that are having cooling problems, try useing the new extended life coolant (the red stuff). I installed it in my sled when I rebuilt it and by the temp gauge it runs at a much more consistant temperature, and will idle for a much longer time before the gauge runs up to near the red. Very important to flush your cooling system with water before adding this coolant. I first stated to use this stuff in my motocross bike. A Honda rep said they do not recomend even useing the old green stuff because it contains silicates, and the silicates are an abrasive that eats the water pump seals. Im sold on the stuff!!!

Heres some food for thought. Last season A few guys had problems with their temp lights coming on while riding down a rugged access trail from my friends house. The weird part was it was only the guys on ski-doos. One of them claims it has to do with intake velocity. Sleds with larger carbs have lower intake velocities and this causes less fuel break-up at low speeds so technically you are running lean. All the others in the bunch were on Yamahas, which use much smaller carbs (33's I think), and none of them had problems. There were two 00 MXZ's, an 02 Mach Z, and a Millenium Edition Mach Z. I am not sure if there are any differences in the cooling systems on these sleds but they were all having the same problem. Maybe the whole intake velocity thing makes sense, maybe ski-doos tend to run hot, or maybe their temp lights just come on earlier.

tb2, I take it you're refering to Dex-Cool. I haven't read anything about its use in sleds. But you are correct in the lack of abrasives in it compared to ethylene glycol (the green stuff)

if you put a stat in a mach that dosent have one oem you can drill small holes in the stat so that the coolent still moves through the system slowly when the stat is closed. the 97-98 modles had a bypass hose for the stst http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/baaa.gif

tb2 - I would be a little cautious with the long life coolant. This coolant doesn't like aluminum very much and contrary to what some of the reps may tell you it will attack o-rings and seals. I've spent the last ten years as a mechanic working on highway tractors and you should see what that stuff does to a $50,000 engine. I think what needs to be kept in mind is to use a good quality coolant that is mixed at the right ratio. If you buy pre-mixed coolant test it first. It freeze protection may surprise you. I use regular coolant but I test its strength and ph on a regular basis. I use a product called NALCOOL which I picked up at a Highway Tractor dealership and it keeps the system in good shape and cuts back on the electrolosis which eats away at the aluminum.

I`ll second that the dexcool dose some nasty stuff to many of the autos I see come through our shop.

Guy's!! I have been there done that! Put in the stat! It will only heat up on you if there is little snow or you are idling around, as this would happen with any sled.
Just stop and think about it for a moment. There is no control over the flow, it is just cranki'n around and around, it doesn't have much time to cool in the exchangers. Even when the stat is wide open it is restricting the size of the hole to slow it down. If Doo says they dont need it anymore then why is there a place for it and why do the dealers recommend installing one if you are going to ride normal.
This is a great set up for ice and grass racers so they can run their cool down carts.
All I can say is I have tried it, have it, and it works for me....

I agree Mikadoo both my 98and 99 ck3 mach's would get hot if the snow conditions were not optimal or I was idling around. I think one of the problems with CK3 overheating is with the rear tunnel flap design. A longer flap would help them. I always had a wet butt on my CK3. I used to have to put a saturday edition of the Toronto star in the seat of my pants just to keep from freezing.

What about the twins? To be honest, never even noticed if mine had one.

I know for sure the 800 twin has a stat so i would imagine the other
series 3 engines would as well. :)

I just looked through the 2000CD, and I don't see a stat. listed for a twin. The newer ones have one?
