Hi,
I've been poking away at this electrical problem on my 81 everest. I am sparkless.
If i feed power to the coils (from a battery), i get a spark...which leads me to the power generator...where is it, what is it?
:bash:
I looked for a pick-up or a generator coil, but can't seem to find it. I must admit i didn't try real hard....working on a skidoo in an unheated garage at -10C :christmas: encourage more thinking and less tinkering.
Anyone have a scanned copy of a manual?
Thanks for any advice you can provide,
Charlie

The stator is buried in under the recoil starter and behind the flywheel. You should see where the wires come out of the case and attach to the CDI (assuming CDI, rather than still being points) and then the coils and wiring. If you pull the connectors and clean them up, try measuring the output from your stator. If there is nothing, you have to remove the recoil, flywheel and other parts to access it. A puller is required to remove the flywheel. Once it is off, the stator can be removed and inspected. If it has sat for a while, then it may simply be rust on the pickups of the coil, but it could also be a burnt coil. A hand impact driver helps a bunch in removing the case screws and stator. You don't say if you have eliminated the CDI, but it could also be bad and is a whole lot easier to access than the stator (mounted on the case or nearby), so check it first.

Thats sled should be points and condensers unless someone has converted it. My buddy had the same problem with his 80. Correct if im wrong ski-doo didn't go CDI untill 85??

I see a listing of the 81 Everest being CDI, and other models were the same. Some were still points and condenser until later though.

Update:
It's a condenser and point ignition system. There was some rust on the pick-ups, so i sanded down the surfaces and put it all back together (making sure that there was no more contact between the flywheel and the pick-ups). That didn't do it.
I did notice, using my ohm-meter, that there is continuity between the points even when they're open... Any ideas? Someone here mentioned the voltage correction thing was a weak link...how would i test this? (this is the square unit with 4 wires that is screwed to the frame...you can see some resistors through the clear resin).
HELP!
