: 2001 zr 800 pistons
zr800o1 09-24-2002, 11:37 PM I heard today that Arctic Cat has Announced a Recall Bulletin about the problems with 2001 ZR 800 Pistons, and are offering a 2002 Piston Kit Update to Correct the problem. I was wondering if this was true or not, and is there any cost to the Consumer? *Thanks. * zr800o1
TallCool1 09-25-2002, 09:15 AM I've heard about the problems, where did you hear about the recall?? *Will this be done even if the sled is out of warranty?
sled-head 09-25-2002, 11:20 AM If its a recall than it doesnt matter if its out of warranty. The same thing happened to the 98 ZR 600,s with specific serial #'s. One thing I will say about Cat is that thair warranty department looks after people........I even got warranty on a track from Cat.........and we all know how hard it is to get warranty on tracks. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
ZR Sled Head 09-26-2002, 05:28 PM Lots of talk on several sites that some dealers have already received written details of the recall.
84EVR 09-27-2002, 07:20 AM What is the problem that people are having with them. Meltdown? Cracking? What? *Just curious. I have a friend with one and about 4500 miles on it without a problem.
ZR Sled Head 09-27-2002, 02:02 PM The problem is with the skirts cracking, pieces falling off and taking out the engine.
sled-head 09-28-2002, 03:23 PM Sounds alot like My 01 summitX800.........The biggest piece of scrap to ever hit the snow.
ZR Sled Head 09-28-2002, 10:37 PM According to information on other sites (which will remain nameless) dealers are receiving information on the updated parts as we speak and customers should be receiving letters from AC in the near future. If this info proves to be correct, its certainly a strong show of customer commitment from AC. :)
sledcrazy 09-28-2002, 10:49 PM sled-head, from what ive seen AC doesnt like to answer to people when it comes to warranty issues. my friend who owns a shop, some guy had a 98 or 99 zr something, had a re-call on the clutch, CAT didnt do anything about it, they just left the guy sitting there jacking off. and another thing has happened to a guy i know, so CAT isnt to good w/ their warranties from my experiences.
petestoy 09-29-2002, 10:20 AM I called Arctic Cat on friday and theier response was that there is no recall or bulletin for 01 pistons and that their is no problem with them. They also said that all the talk about them is strictly rumor.
Personally I hope its True.
84EVR 09-30-2002, 06:29 AM On another topic they say the recall is true.
SOmebody even gave a number.
This is what they said it was. #2003-1-7 part number 0637-223. They stated it was for the 2001 piston recall. Don't know if its true or not.
TallCool1 09-30-2002, 03:40 PM There is definately a recall...no cost to customer. Just got off the phone with local dealer and he read the recall to me ver batim (sp?), it said '01 twin cylinder motors, so I guess that means the Pantera's and ZL's also.
Pete, do you have the name of the person you spoke to at CAT??? I would like to call them and report them to their boss. If anyone else is told by CAT or a dealer that this doesn't exist, you can tell them that they are full of @#$%.
Thanks for the info guys.
Jim
petestoy 09-30-2002, 03:42 PM No I don't have the name of the guy I talked he was one of the monkeys that answers the phone regarding Tech matters.
z800rotax 09-30-2002, 03:47 PM I remember reading in snow tech about some 01 zr 800's with higher mileage having piston skirts breaking :0: It was one of the earlier issues
in last season but i remember it as i got to tease my friend who was making
fun of my doo 800 for having to be recalled for pistons ;) Hope it works out
for you guys as i think the companies should stand behind their product.
T_Cat 09-30-2002, 07:12 PM I emailed my dealer last night and got a response today.. that yes they are recalling the Pistons in the 01 800's..
Get this.. the dealer is only getting .8 tenths of hour to make the repair.. If your getting yours done you might want to ask them to take a little time and check things out.. They are not making enough money to even slow down and clean things.
Labarron's Arctic Cat is First rate..
What a great dealer,, all parts in stock ready to take care of everyone..
ZR Sled Head 09-30-2002, 09:47 PM sledcrazy, I've found exactly the opposite to be true with Cat. Its been known to take a fair bit of communication (ya politely bugging the crap out of them) but in the end they usually make good on service issues. :)

Cat has been good to me........The fix is in My dealer has the 01 piston recall letter.
WickedWiesel 10-01-2002, 11:10 PM I've got an 01 800 but I haven't heard anything from my dealer yet . What's a reasonable length of time for a dealer to get in touch . I'm going to call my dealer tomorrow but I'm just trying to guage my dealer I guess . ???

T_Cat 10-02-2002, 06:49 AM This thread contains all the info you need to give to the dealer.. Just call them and give the bullettin #. The rest is up to them
The dealer or Cat will not send out letters like GM and Ford..
It's a shame but the truth..
hpzrt600 10-02-2002, 08:06 AM I also have to disagree with sled-head...Arctics warranty department is definately not known for great customer service. Almost all the guys I ride with have Cats and they have all bough them for years and when any problem comes up, it is more times than not a constant up hill fight with them.
This recall will most likely be a silent type recall...which means it's there, but only to people with problems or people who ask about it.
TallCool1 10-02-2002, 09:23 AM ZR800, you'll grow old and gray if you wait for a dealer or CAT to call you for a recall...don't wait, go belly up to your local dealer's service dpt and get your sled in there.
Unfortunately w/CAT, and probably the others, it really depends on who you end up talking to when you call them. Some of you might remember, I had an issue at a dealer and CAT promised me I would get my $300 snocheck deposit back. This went on for months and no check in the mail. About the 4th time I called to see where my check was, the guy I had been talking to no longer worked for them. Guess what, no one else knew anything about it. So I started over w/another guy there, and he told me I did not deserve the money...was I pissed!! I let this guy know what I thought of him and his lack of customer service. He finally arranged a $300 in-store credit w/the dealer, 300 miles away (Nielsens in Chicago, I do not recommend buying anything from them). A few months later when I went to the dealer to cash in, Ted Nielsen, the owner, said he knew nothing of it. So I'm pissed again and drive home. Called CAT again and somehow got a hold of one of their legal advisors/lawyer and she took care of me perfectly, just like it should have been from the beginning. I would normally quit doing business w/someone after this type of treatment, but I've heard horror stories about the other 3 also.

petestoy 10-05-2002, 10:12 PM I seen the letter today at a dealership. I called him yesterday and he had know clue as to what I was talking about. I guess he opened his mail late in the day because this morning when I went in he had it and showed me it. Does anyone know how those recalls get posted in this site. I noticed it wasn't on te list. Now that it is official sdhould it not be their?
1BADZR 10-08-2002, 09:57 PM talked to a/c today, piston kits will not be avaliable for release until
october 17th or so. also called dealer, said no problem just bring it in
so far so good. lets just hope there the same as new when we get them
back. :(
TallCool1 10-09-2002, 09:19 AM My dealer said the same thing about the kits not being available yet.
Auggie 10-09-2002, 11:18 AM Jim, I know there is a recall on the recoil starter for the "02" ZR800's but dose that include the "01" 800's.
Auggie
TallCool1 10-09-2002, 11:35 AM Haven't heard anything about the recoils being recalled yet Auggie.

WickedWiesel 10-09-2002, 07:58 PM :
doh: talked to the wrench at my dealer today . he said he got the bulletin yesterday . he told me that he was going through the list of people that he had to call but that they don't have the parts yet. he wasn't to happy to here from me. now I'll have to call him tomorrow to find out about the pull cord . they should do something about the cord because of where it's routed . I changed my cord last year because it rubs and gets thin .
CaptainKirk 10-10-2002, 09:13 AM My 800 is in for new pistons and rings as I type here in Manitoba. They have allowed .8 time only which is correct...The dealer wants to make a little money on extras such as deglaze cyls and clean powervalves....He said Cat was mailing notices to all 800 owners about this ....but you have to remember that some sleds have changed owners already....But he claimed that they are still covered..Check with your dealer.
F7 on the way!
