I just purchased this and the previous owner said it has approx. 200 mi. on a rebuilt motor, but the right (pull start side) head gasket blew out. He says he just bolted the heads on but not real tight (so as not to overtighten). When the gasket blew someone told him he should have run the engine till it got to operating temp. then re-torqued them after it cooled down.
:bash:
What is the correct procedure for replacing/torqueing for the head gaskets? What are the torque specs?

I'm out of town now but I think the Jag has 6 head nuts. If so, do this...

13 -16 ft. lbs., do in a criss cross pattern.

Make a sketch of the cylinder head studs circular pattern. Number them clockwise 1 thru 6. Tighten in this order in 4 lb. increments. No need to retorque when warm.

1,4,2,5,3,6

There's only 4 studs w/ a washer, lock washer, and a nut. The bolt pattern is almost a perfect square pattern--but your method should still work reguardless of the amount of studs/bolts (1,3,2,4 starting from the left upper stud). My gaskets will be in Tues. afternoon and I'm putting them on after work.

If there are only 4 studs on the cylinder head, the studs are probably a larger diameter than the 6 stud head.
This would mean the torque would be a higher value than I gave you. Without the information you need at hand, I would hold off tightening anything until someone else can help you with the data for your engine.
