I wanted to find out what was needed to register a snowmobile and this is the word from the DMV.

If you are currently registered you should receive a renewal in the mail. If you don't or lose it you will have to go to your local DMV and fill out a MV-50 registration form.

If you lose your registration you will have to go to your local DMV and fill out a MV-50 to obtain a dup(copy) of your registration.

If you buy a sled off a private owner you will need their registration signed by them. A signed receipt from the owner. A DPT802 tax form filled out by the owner and a MV-50 registration form.

If you are buying from a dealer they should handle all the paperwork for you.


If you lose your registration and it has been a bunch of years (5 or more) since you registrered it you will to fill out a MV-51V statement of ownership with a pencil tracing of the vin or photograph of the vin. Check with your local DMV to double check that you were deleted from the system first.

If you lose the registration on a sled you bought and did not register it in your name and it has not been a year you will have to get a hold of the past owner to get a dup registration. If you cannot locate the owner check with your local DMV.

If you lose the registration on a sled you bought and did not register it in your name and it has been over a year than you need to fill out a MV-51V STATEMENT OF OWNERSHIP and make a pencil tracing of the vin or take a clear picture of the vin. This will get you a non-transferable registration till the DMV investigates to make sure the sled was not reported stolen. Afterward you receive a regular registration.

I went through that with a sled I bought in Malone. DMV in N. Tonawanda was very helpful. I had both pictures of the VIN and an etching with a notarized bill of sale. Went really smoothly and I thought the lady at DMV was one of the best I've ever dealt with.

the MV-51V STATEMENT says for 1972 or older?

snowmobiles are non titled so your transferable registration is your ownership. should you lose that and are not able to get a duplicate you can use what is called an mv51-b this form is used to register all non title vehicles 1972 or older and snowmobiles,atv's ect. any thing that has a transferable registration. This is the form you will need if you no longer have your ownership. You can go to NYS DMV web site and down load this form. you will also need the MV-82SN that is the snowmobile registration form. When you use the MV-51B you need a vin tracing or a photo of the vin number. You will get a sticker for your sled that day and leave the DMV with a nontransferable registration. Once the DMV has reviewed all your paperwork and it checks out ok they will mail you a transferable reg. You will be able to ride your sled right away but would not be able to sell it until the transferable reg was mailed to you.
