: Skidoo's Faulty Belts
F4Rider 01-25-2006, 02:58 AM ive heard alot about bombardier having a problem with there belts. last year alot of guys were blowing belts on there new revs like crazy and this year i blew on on my sled but the only thing that went wrong was the cords came out the side other then that the belt looks brand new. i was curious if anyone else had this problem and if so how they went about returning it to get re embursed because now this year the dealer will send them away to get analized but wont just exchange it for a new belt. thanks scott
paul yarek 01-25-2006, 05:59 AM never heard a thing, i have heard though that the REV clutch area could use a little more ventilation to keep the clutches cool and that might be the problem.
ski-doorider 01-25-2006, 08:50 AM No issues here. I've been getting 5000km's to a belt the last few years with the factory belts. I have seen the issue you mention about the cords coming out. My friends ZX 800's would have the belts do that quite often.
Rocketman 01-25-2006, 05:42 PM never had a problem with doo belts...
CORY9 01-25-2006, 06:37 PM Have concerns with my 06, less than 200 kilometers and there is a ton of belt dust, way beyond normal. Keeping a close eye on it.
Steimy 01-25-2006, 06:53 PM I've smoked 2 in only 2500 miles so far on my o5 Rev. I smoked 1 in about 10,000 miles on the old zx. Every time they blow they're hotter than $h#t.
JasonF 01-25-2006, 10:25 PM If you want to run you belt cooler be sure to take off the black plastic clutch cover. This make a huge difference on your belt temp, all you have to do is drill out the rivets and just reinstall it like the old stlye covers. You can also take off your windage plates on your secondary, this exposed the fins on the clutch to the air and creates a little wind turbulance which also keeps the belt cooler.
DOO THE DOO 01-25-2006, 11:41 PM I have also seen this. My friends Dad has a 2000 Grand Touring 500 he put 2 belts through it in one week same thing as you described. He now runs Ultimax 3 with no probs.
Skidoo366 01-25-2006, 11:41 PM never had any belt problems with any of my sleds so far. Hope to keep it that way
F4Rider 01-26-2006, 02:32 AM hmm maybe ill have to get rid of that huge cover on my sled to cool it off more. i ran into 3 guys last year and one guy went thru 3 belts and the other 2 guys went thru 2 belts in a few months. When they brought there blown belts back the dealer, they looked at the number on the belt and rembursed them a new belt. thats why i was curious if anyone had heard anything about it, because now i have to send the belt to bombardier to get them to analize it to see what happened and if it was one of the fault belts. which im sure i will know the answer i will get. Another guy told me bombardier had a problem with there USA made belts but the ones in Austria. But who's to say thats the truth.
doo rider 01-26-2006, 06:56 AM I would hesitate to say that the people blowing alot of belts have clutch alignment problems. How many of these people have done or tried to do clutch work themselves, and have aligned them properly. I have never blown a belt on me sleds. I have work quite a few out, but never exploded one.

I'm no bombardier certified tech, but I'm pretty sure you have to pull the motor, (or at least loosen your motor mounts) to screw up your allignment. Just putting on a clutch kit in will not mess up allignment. Some clutch kits do eat belts more than the stock setups, but that's due to how hot they run and how hard they hit, not allignment...
I just bought a new 127 belt, and to me it looked like it had more exposed cord (only on one side) than a new belt should have. I know you can see the cord, but you shouldn't be able to 'feel' it. I didn't notice this until I got it home... I'm going to run it, but I wonder if they just had a bad batch of belts or something...
F4Rider 01-26-2006, 01:54 PM my belt had the same feeling on one side with the cords. and i have my sled at camp but i will post a pic of how the threads came out of one side and the whole rest of the belt looks brand new just the side with the cords sticking out was the side that got all pulled out.
sledshed 01-26-2006, 02:02 PM It has been years since I had a Ski Doo but I always acredited them with high quality parts and snowmobiles. I've been using the Gates belts for a bunch of years since with a lot of success. I wouldn't be surprised if the problem was somewhere else and not with the belts. SWRules
Torkguy 01-26-2006, 05:26 PM at least 75% of belt failure is caused by engine misalignement. Aligning everything fine is tricky, and if you don't know where to start, it can be a total mess. Some belt failure can be due to abusing the clutch (like driving in deep, heavy snow at low speed) but if your usual riding condition do that your belt use too quick, or overheat, then you should change the pulleys adjustements. In 20 000km of sled riding, I blew only one belt, and it was on the GT580 at high speed. Otherwise, most of them were changed after getting flat spotted (my yougn brother was famous for that) or or excessive worned (not wide enough). I'd say that 5-6000km where their usual life.
We used to do mini-modified tractor pulling with a 583, using the sled pulleys. We choked some belt with some of our bad clutch setup, but we also pulled 15 000lbs sitting on a metal plate, sliding on the pavement. It's just a matter of using the good combinaisons.
MikeD 01-26-2006, 05:35 PM At 7000 K's I'm only on my 2nd belt, and the first one I frigged by my own stupidity (parking brake :bash: )
Machster670 01-29-2006, 01:58 PM I have been playing, modifing, racing and generally messing around with sled more year that I want to admit to LOL> Any time I see or hear about a sled eating belts CLUTCH ALIGNMENT comes to mind, of all the "new" sled that i have worked on I have never seen one with the clutches properly aligned when it left the dealership. I have always realigned my clutchs before the first ride.
F4Rider 01-29-2006, 06:02 PM i was out today and my friends 06 renegade blew the cords out of its second belt. his sled has unher 750 miles on it and it did the exact same thing to his belt as mine sucks to be him tho I also drilled out the rivits on the extra cover on the clutch gaurd like someone mentioned and when u look at it the extra plastic they added was pointless.
