OK everybody. Here it is .... the official S.W. Cochrane Charity Ride thread.

The ride is taking place from March 6th through to March 14th. There are many people coming later, earlier, staying later or leaving earlier, so for all intents and purposes the official week end of "fun and frivolity" will be March 10th to 12th.

The only definite plans right now are a group ride to the Canyon on Saturday, and the S.W. Charity Run Party, Saturday Night at Lillabelle Lodge. There will also be a "food drive collection box" stationed at North Adventure and another at Lillabelle. We are working on a location for a get together Friday night so we can all meet and form groups for the Canyon ride and other week end rides. This meeting place will most likely be at NAI, I'll post here with more info. Meeting is scheduled for 8:00 pm Friday in the bar at the North Adventure!

The Party Saturday night at Lillabelle is a BYOB event. (No Bar charges here!) We have been given the basement party room all to ourselves, it'll be a private party. Bring your own "party supplies" to the lodge, or call or e-mail Rod or Kim and they will arrange to get it there for you. Ice and mix will be available. This is where we will collect the "optional" $20 per person charitable donation. Each $20 donation will net you a goody bag, and 4 door prize draw tickets. Additional tickets will be $5.00 each. If you're NOT participating in the Charity draw, please PM me so I can keep a fairly accurate count on the goody bags. Proceedes will be going to a local charity, to be furthered to needy families in the area. Important!!!!! Unless you are staying at Lillabelle or don't drink, please don't ride your sled to the party Saturday night. Dahmer and Fraz are working on transportation to and from the other hotels (North Adventure and Best Western) so you won't even be tempted to ride. It doesn't get any better than that!

So far for sponsors we have; Fast Eddies Racewear, Bill Cudney Racing, Crack the Throttle (super duper sledwear) Imagewear, Lakeview Performance Marine (Windsor), E&B Paralegal Inc., J.R's Ribs in Cochrane, RaceTechnology, Dalton Timmis Insurance, Equipment Express Inc. We are working on more. If you can rustle up a door prize (hats, jackets, shirts, sled stuff) bring it with you to Lillabelle Saturday Night. Now ... for the Charity, I'm hoping everyone from SW and thier guests will donate, so I'm preparing about 30 goody bags. We could use some stuffers for these. Key chains, wax packets, lip balm (wet azz anti-chap) samples etc are all good stuffers. If you can dig up 30 of something, bring it to Lillabelle as well.

I'm going to try to reporoduce the attendance list from memory, but as most of you know, I've never been accused of being a "mental giant" (just mental) and I am getting older. My retention is dropping faster than I care to admit so please, correct me, or add your info as soon as possible. I need a fairly accurate count for tables and give aways!

If you have any questions or concerns, please post them here so I can address them publicly. If you want to help out, put that here as well or PM me. Thanks for your patience and understanding, I'll be posting again soon to dispell some Cochrane myths for the newbies.

A couple important links: HATS (http://www.snowmobileworld.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=60285) and SHIRTS (http://www.snowmobileworld.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=60280)

We are going to have a BALL!

Dispelling the Myths

For some of you, this will be your first trip to Cochrane, some your first trip to Canada, so I'd like to clarify a few mis-conceptions that I've heard.

1) There's no gas.
Not true. We have gas in Canada, and in Cochrane too. Depending on who you ask (and to what type you are referring) we may even have more gas than the U.S. We stopped using whale blubber some time ago ... :D Now, If you are doing the Canyon ride, your sled must be capable of going 100 miles (160 KMs) on a tank of fuel as that's about how far it is to the extreme tours base camp where fuel (somewhat expensive fuel) is available. Make sure you're topped up before you go, and at least one person in your "group" has spare fuel and a sturdy tow rope. I ran out last year with 6 miles to go.

2) It's dark/light all the time.
Not true. It's north NOT the North Pole!! The sun sets and rises just like it does at your house, just without that tinge of brown on the horizon, and you may or may not recognize the person in the next bed, at least not right away.

3) The Bears and Wolves will eat me.
PROBABLY not true. If you go see the Polar Bear display, and fall in to the compound, they may eat you. Your chance of seeing one in the wild are so slight, I can't think of a descriptor. Wolves? If you run out of gas (see # 1) swallow your pride and be a "dope on a rope" or borrow gas. DO NOT, under any circumstances, strip naked, cover yourself in blood and howl ... and for chissakes! tell your wife / girlfriend to leave the "little red riding hood" outfit she got from Fredrerick's (or the Stag Shop) at home .... no matter how much you're yearning to hear her say "My what big teeth you have Mr. Wolf" ... wait for it .... (sometimes I crack myself up)

4) Only Long Trackers run up there.
Not true. The long trackers are normally the only sleds successfully playing off trail. In addition to the very wide, flat OFSC trails, there are several other trails you will find going just about anywhere. Your 121 will be just fine, just know your sleds limits, and of course, your own.

5) Fraz is Sasquatch.
Not true. Although he may look hairy, the stuff stuck to his face is bits of frost, snow dust, belt dust, toque fuzz, (possible scattering of snot) and the odd cottontail. With a few hours of "sledder stubble" (the inabilty to take the time to shave cuz the conditions are too awsome) Fraz's face becomes a crap holder (Sorta like how metal shavings stick to a magnet) making him somewhat difficult to look at ... untill he thaws.

6) Dahmer eats people.
Different city, different country, different time .... different Dahmer. JR's Ribs is a restaraunt, NOT a hobby.

$1 US = $0.871839 Cad

So $1.89 ltr = $6.24 USD/Gal

OUCH :!:

That is true, but when you are 100 miles from fuel, and all this fuel has to be trucked in, you can see it. Most will carry spare fuel (I do) so you don't end up buying too much. Just enough to top off and get back ...

The scenery in the Canyon makes it worth every penny!

I am going to be in the area with Snowtrails TV for the first two weeks of March. I can't promise anything yet, but we are going to see if we can work out the schedule to drop in on you guys. We have a 4 day trip starting in New Liskeard and staying in Val Gagne, Timmins, Shining Tree, then back to New Liskeard. Then we have a 3 day run around North Bay, what they refer to as the Near North Region. We are not sure of the exact dates nor the order in which we are doing them yet. We'll know in a week or so we hope. I'm crossing my fingers that we get to drop in you. In any case have a great ride. I'll be there in spirit.

There are 6 of us staying in from New Liskeard on the 8th and saddle baggin' it to Cochrane on the 9th. After the SW stuff is done, we are riding back to New Liskeard on the 13th, staying over night and driving home on the 14th. With any luck we cross paths .....

Good thinkin Dahmer.
The time is drawing closer.
Hope the snow keeps falling up there for another month. How deep are the powerlines now?
I'm heading to the lower French River to ride some powder lines this weekend and they say they have gotten 3 ft of new snow over the last 2 weeks. Hope you've been getting dumped on too.

I think "yes" ... It's not too far of a drive, she'll put a few miles on but I'm sure we'll make it worth your while. BTW, will she be available Friday night? (see next post)

Latest update!!!

Jeff (Trailblazer) has arranged for us to have our own "reserved" section in the bar at the North Adventure Inn on Friday night. After speaking with a few of you, 8:00 PM seemed to be the most popular time to meet so that's what we've asked for.

If you wish to link up with other SW'ers, plan to be at the BAR in the NAI at 8:00 Friday evening. I suppose the (a'hem) meeting will go untill at least 10:00 but please get there as close to 8 as possible. We can use this time to form groups (if desired) for Saturday's Canyon ride, and to plan anything else we'd like to do for the balance of our stay.

See you all there!

Michael

As always, please post here if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns.

HEAD COUNT REQUIRED

Hi all. I need your help here. The only list we have going is a list of everyone staying in Cochrane and what hotel they'll be in. I need to know how many of you will be attending the Charity Party/Meeting being held at Lillabelle on Saturday night after the canyon ride. ALL ARE WELCOME!!!

I'm preparing "grab bags" similar to last year. If you donate the $20.00, you will receive one of the bags and tickets to the door prize draw. Obviously, I don't want to bring up 40 bags if less will be participating and coversely, I don't want to get caught short either! So please, get your name on the list (and spread the word to other attending) I know many of you made posts earlier about "being in for $20", and I hate to bug you, but that thread, as you know, was lost and I need a guestimate at least.

Thanks in advance for your help.

As before, just copy and paste this list in a reply, adding your name. Please indicate the # of bags/draw tickets packages you'll need. (you can buy for others as well ;-)) You can just PM me if you like, and I'll add your name.

Please don't feel like you have to donate. I understand this trip is expensive and really, the whole idea of this trip was for all of us to get together, share some memories and create new ones .... good times for everyone. I hope to see EVERYONE there!

I'll start.

Grab Bags (21)

Hey All, just a quick heads up. Only 3 weeks to go now, we are starting to collect some decent prizes (shirts, vests, hats,.... a "ski doo" factory helmet!) plus more stuff, please , keep it coming!

What we still REALLY need is stuffers for the grab bags. Right now they are a little "sparse" so I could use your help. At present, we have about 21 bags accounted for, so I'm gunning for 30. What I need is anything small but usefull. Pens, note pads, lip balm, key chains, penlights etc. you get the idea!

Let me know what you've got or what you can get, hit up a local business you deal with that "owes" you ... yep, call in that favor!

There are ALOT of you out there that are coming, I know we can collect more than what we've got!

Thanks for your help!!

Michael

And ... don't forget the food drive, there will be a collection box at NAI and another at Lillabelle.

I'd give the hotel your going to stay at a call and ask them if they sell passes. A lot of them have 1 and 7 day passes.
If they don't I'm sure they will be able to tell you who to contact so you can pick one up when you get there.

Quick question. Do I need insurance to ride the trails up there? If so what kind of coverage.

EDIT: Called Best Western and they told me that all we needed was the identification Numbers. So is proof of insurance something we need to carry on the trails (even if we are from the US) if you don't know please send me a PM of someone to call. Not trying to get around anything, just want to get the facts straight and be ready to ride. Thanks

EDIT 2: All set, I took it upon myself to just go and get the insurance. My insurance guy is not even going to charge me for the week. Everybody complains about insurance, well mayby you should talk to my guy

Hi my soon-to-be-fellow adventurers.

I just got off of the phone with MikeD.

He had a great ride around New Liskeard.

He's leaving at 8:00AM Thursday morning to head up to Cochrane as previously

planned.

JT,

He said he'd call you in the morning to see if you were still going to meet him at

"Rollies in Ramore" (sp?) Seeing as poor mlabudda has allready succumbed to the

"Anything's Possible" syndrome. He doesn't want you to feel you need to stick with

that plan.

Mlabudda,

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

If you did blow a hole in your piston, Mike says to pick up a piston, top half gasket

set, wrist pin, bearing and he'll give you a hand changing that out.

Get a hold of Dahmer to find out where to get the parts.

Looking forward to seeing Y'all, in a couple of days.

Budda's sled is sitting in the garage in a few pieces. He is riding a spare one, so he doesn't have to sit here and drink beer (during the day). If they get back in time today, I think they're gonna take another look at it! It snowed most of the day yesterday and today it is -1celcius right now. Should be a great day for them. Around 19 of them took off for some good riding.

Cochrane trip was a blast, Thanks too Jeff D. for taking a huge group out on friday for some off trail fun. Conditions that day were excellent!

Saturday's ride too the canyon was excellent as well it wasn't till on the way back were the conditions started too get alittle ruff, but when it hit's 10c what do you expect.

Our ride on sunday was alittle ruff but still good, it was really nice going into Greenwater park....the trails in there were mint as none of the Lillebelle haywires tore it up!!!!1  And a excellent view up on top of the mountain.

It was also great too finally get out for a ride with Tunedbyyear and his better half!

We had a great group that stuck together for the entire ride..... Andy and Bev.....Revman and Revgirl.......Rob and Jordan (Insane sledder) Illian and myself!

I'm sure most of this group is sick of my roost, that was usually 50' high

And a big thanks too Mike D for doing a great job Saturday night, .....If only i could have gotten a hat out of the dude! :whistling:

I had a great time .... Dahmer .. what a blast Friday was, I can't wait to follow you around again some time. I'll try to get stuck closer to the trail next time! I'm very pleased with the way things turned out, the draw raised $600.00 for charity, and just about everyone got a prize of some sort, there were 3 tables full of give-aways!

The ride back to New Liskeard was interesting. The first bit was like riding frozen slush ruts, we also had some gravel and frozen mud. About 50 to 80K was good to excellent but it was hard to tell cuz our visors were frozen over with sleet and freezing rain. Then the rain came. It poured... most of us got soaked thru. My "man parts" retreated to pre birth regions making it somewhat difficult to squirt trail side. I found them later after a hot shower.

We made it across the Earlton? river, everyone had to skip it, that was quite fun. Unfortunately, the last 11km's down the Wabi was impassible, the water was up over the ridable portion of the banks.

Thanks Rottie!! Steve (our resident host and swell fella in New Liskeard) went to the Hotel and picked up one of our trucks. And a local who's house was trailside let us stay warm and dry in his heated garage and drove 2 more of our group into Liskeard to pick up the other two trucks. We all got back in to town some time a little after 9 pm (maybe 10?).

Anyhow ... I'd do it all again in a heart beat, it was great seeing you all again, and meeting some new people ... Next year? Who knows!

Michael

BTW, I only ran out of gas once this year! 3.6k's away from the station in Moonbeam on the way to Cya's cottage on Watersnake Lale ... Not bad!

Of course we had a great time as well riding from New Liskeard to Cochrane and back with MikeD. The trails were sure beat on the way back on Monday and the rain/freezing rain/sleet/snow added to it.

As Sawman said, the conditions were poor for Cochrane at this time of the year. I guess nothing is guaranteed anymore :(

Thanks again to MikeD for taking over the organization and Rottie (and family) for his fine hospitality in NL.

Looking forward to next season's get-together... I'll post some pics later as well.

I checked the Weather Network this morning and it was -14C in Cochrane with snow in the forecast for almost the entire week. I'm pretty sure it was close to +14C on Saturday in the Canyon.

We sure could've used some of that snow between Cochrane and Elk Lake on the way back. Some of those logging roads were just brutal!

I think you saw me on the rental. My Skidoo MXZ 800 puked a piston Friday night. I rented a Yamaha Nitro for the rest of the weekend.

My dealer is doing a complete teardown to check everything out since I told them I wasn't happy with the last service I got on that sled and was nervous about buying another from them unless I was happy with them this time around.

OntRider

It wasn't the truck that received the worst of the roost. I didn't even realize it was doing it...I filled Bev's helmet so full she was blowing snow out of her nose. I was looking for the camera, but she was not terribly helpful...

Try getting towed by that monster!

While I was so very grateful to get a tow back in when my machine died, the snow on my helmet was so heavy I had trouble keeping my head up and had to keep punching the visor to loosen the snow.

Looks like MikeD is not the only one with a short-bus sled story now...imagine riding along with one hand on the brakes, the other desparately trying to clear your visor and occassionally punching your visor. Yeah, it was a special kind of spectacle...

It was amazing to ride with everyone again. I met some friends I have been missing since Pinestone and met some new friends from here. I can say without a doubt that I would ride with every one of you jokers. Perhaps not ride behind you...but in your group.

For the folks that missed this ride, never let fear stand between you and meeting and riding with these excellent folks. That would be a disservice to yourself and you'll miss meeting some of the coolest cats I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and riding with.

Wish we had more time to meet and chat with more people, but then again, if we had more time, we probably would have been out getting stuck somewhere :bash:
Thanks to Mike D for all he did in organizing the event, and special thanks to SW !!

Hope to meet you all again next year.

A special thanks to Mike, Rod & Kim Dalmer and all the sponsors.

Great job pulling all the stuff together Mike and making the 3rd. Canadian ride a big hit.
How much did we manage to raise?

A special thanks also to Rod and Kim for letting us use Lillabelle's again for the Sat. party. Your great folks and I'm honoured to call you friends. See you in the summer.

Dalmer, it's always a pleasure to ride with you because you always teach me something new and show me the way to the top of the hills.

Thank you for sponsoring a great event.

So let's do it again next feb...and fingers crossed that MikeyD will have a hat for one of his supporting members......fingers and toes , and anything else i can cross.....Crossed!!!!!

Actually, I wish VideoMike had caught the tow-ride back to NAI...that was wicked trying to keep my googles clean so I could see your brake light come on and keep my helmet unloaded so I could see...

In any case, picked up the sled from the dealer's last night. They figure given some strange scuffing on the jug that the piston might have been bad from the factory. Didn't cost me a dime, but they changed the crank, rods, bearings, piston, cylinder, rings and all the gaskets, etc. Took it for a short ride and it seems the mysterious knocking is gone, so that must have been a precursor to the meltdown.

Won't stop me from buying another 800 p-tek...though for next year, I'm looking a lot at the new 800 R in the 144" baby-Summit.

Due to us americans and attending the US ride as well ,JT, me, Keith and a few others, were looking into the first or second weekend in March. Feb 28th arrival and March 5 departure is what I am thinking. Long way off though and don't forget the Canadian ride next year was being planned for NFLD. If it is there however, JT and I will more then likely be in the UP or Wawa.

It was great riding with you Kenny (Dodging the icebergs you threw was good practice for dodging the pots pans when I got home lol), I would get that machine in a heartbeat if I could use it properly in the UP.

That's when I'm planning on going up for one of my rides next year.
The snow conditions are usually better in Feb.
March is getting into crust season and that always means warm days and cold nights.

I realize that next year's ride is planned for Newfoundland, but this years ride was planned for B.C, and that didn't happend either.

I don't have the funds or the means too tow my snow blower anywere other than Ontario....so even if this isn't the "official ride" I'm sure enough people had a good time too come back and just have the same group up here having a good time.

I would love too check out Revelstoke or NFL, and some day i will but right now i'm gonna stick too my back yard (Northern Ontrario) I can't get sick of it up here. Between rideing Timmins -Cochrane....Then spending a fair amount in Wawa Hornepayne Manitouwadge area....and NewLiskeard -NorthBay You get alittle bit of everything up here.

So if March is still what works for most people that's still cool, just trying too make it a good as possilbe by suggesting Feburary. :D

Well I can certainly say that as interesting as a B.C. or a Newfoundland ride would be, I have no intentions of dragging my sled all the way out there.

I've ridden B.C. briefly and my sled wouldn't be a desireable ride out there.
I'm sure it would be the same in Newfoundland.

Besides, the long ferry ride to get out to the rock isn't my cup of tea.
That's hours I could spend sitting on my sled here in Ontario.
There's still many miles of unexplored territory to ride here.

I know Quebec has some fantastic trails to ride within a similar distance as Cochrane.
That could be an option if anyone else was interested.

I definitely plan to get back up to Cochrane to ride again.

Next year, the first week in February, I'll be sitting on a cruise ship somewhere in the sunny Carribean. So that time frame wouldn't work for me personally.

We have already set the dates for the U.S. ride. Ours will be the last week of January. The 22nd thru the 27th. Nearly the same time as this years.

I'm curious Andy, why would you think that we would want ours to be in March? We are much farther south than Cochrane.

At present, my plan for next years sled holiday is one or both of the Superior Loops, depending on how much time I have. I may be able to participate in the SW group ride, but probably just for an extended week end.

I will at some point ride the west (maybe Wyoming or Revy), but I'll be flying and renting. I've ridden a little of Quebec and would like to see more but that's probably a couple of years away.... definitely want to ride the Gaspe'.
