Hello All.

New to this board and looking for some help.
I heard this is the best board for advice.
I just bought a used sled 2000 mxz700.
I know the person and it was running fine last year.

While trail riding, I noticed temp gauge on hot.

I smelled burning rubber and upon inspection, noticed the coolant bottle melted against the right cylinder head causing a small hole and drained and pumped the system dry.
After it cooled back down, it would start but not accelerate.

Any help would be greatlt appreciated.

ANy known issues with these sleds and that melting issue???

Thanks in advance guys.

Dave

oh oh not good. i have not heard that one before about the coolant bottle melting does it have the silver heat tape on the outside of the bottle.?

There have been issues with the bottle melting, but because of the proximity of the pipe, not the head. Consider this...A paper cup full of water will not start on fire because the flash point of paper is below the temp of boiling water. Same goes for the coolant bottle. If it has the correct amount of coolant in it , it will not melt. It for sure would not melt to the head unless all the coolant was gone already and the head was super heated.

Having to guess, not knowing all the details, I would say that your coolant was low already (reason to be determined) and the sled overheated because of it. Now due to the overheating, you could have many other problems with that engine. Noe of which can't be fixed, but it will need to be gone thru completely judging by the amount of heat produced by the mag side of the head.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help.
I will have to look into whats wrong.

Any ideas where I should start since it idles fine but does not accelerate?
It bogs down and dies when i throttle it.

I tried new plugs.

TIA

Let's start with a couple of questions.

What did the old plugs look like? Exactly.

What is the current compression reading?

I'd guess minimum damage to be that the rings are stuck and you have some aluminum build up on the nicasil. Many times, excess heat of this magnitude will result in a hole in the top of the piston due to detonation brought on by the excess heat. You really should not try to fire the sled again until you find out what is wrong.

Gray, ashen coloured or specks of aluminum are not good signs.

Thanks guys.
Plugs are tan.
No signs of aluminum

I will do a compression test and see where we are at.

Thanks again guys!!

Id say a compression test is your best starting point. If they dont both read the same (or close to the same) - Id pull the head/jugs off and have a look @ your pistons - If ther is a hole in it, and or the rings are damaged, make sure to take a good look @ the cranks too to make sure no metal shards got down there to cause u larger future problems.
