: Synthetic Or Regular Oil (yamalube)?

I run synthetic in almost everything...with my 0 Mile new 600 Venom, should I run pure Synthetic at twice the cost or Yamalube's just fine?

Will it pay in the long run to run only Synthetic...

Need lots of opinions here...

Thanks!!

Paul :)

I know for vehicles some people say run regular (mineral) oil for the seals to all set properly. After a while you can switch to Synthetic. Just an opinion!

I'd burn synthetic as it burns cleaner. By cleaner I mean fewer carbon deposits on the pistons and rings. I use Shell synthetic but have been looking for a convient source for Blue Marble. It's supposed to take longer to breakin a motor with sythetic but I didn't notice a prolong breakin period when I did the rings on my Phazer.

When you look at what the total costs is to sled...$10bucks a day in oil is cheap.

My two bits...

Yamalube will work fine, but shawn is right, synthetic burns much cleaner. I used Yamalube in my 600 for the first year, and the plugs were always black. I switched to Amsoil and the plugs were then light brown. You'd think it would have to run a little better that way. I did not use the racing Amsoil. That is more expensive, and for trail riding you would not reap the benefits of the higher grade. Regular formula Amsoil is full synthetic, works great and runs 18-20 per gallon. Not a whole lot of difference over Yamalube price.

I use Yamalube always have, I am thinking about going to Castrol Synthetic I have a buddy that uses that in his VMax 4 800 and the plugs look alot cleaner then mine, this is the third year for him using it and his sled has 18000kms on it...

I have used Amsoil HP for the last 2 years in my Viper (and 4 years prior to that on my sx). This year I switched to Amsoil Interceptor hoping for cleaner power valves. I had about 3/4 of a tank of the HP left at the beginning of the season and topped it up with the Interceptor. I have drove about 2500 kms since and consumed about 8 litres . I cleaned the power valves yesterday and I would say they were as dirty as usual after that many kms. I figure I have got mostly Interceptor in there now. The remaining HP will be quite diluted, probably to the point that the effect would be virtually non-existent. I am interested to see what my power valves will look like in the next 2500 kms. Actually this weekend will probably be the last trip this year so I'll hopefully get 1000 - 1200 kms on them and take them apart when I summerize the sled. I'm not too hopeful. I think my sled will always have valves that need to be cleaned often. I don't mind cleaning them. I just go out in the garage when a good hockey game or golf is on tv and spend a few hours going over the sled. I don't know what I would do without a heated garage. Or satellite.

Also as a side not to the Amsoil synthetic. My sx had about 15000 kms when the crank bearing failed (I believe the seal went first). My buddy owned it at the time and when we tore the jugs off, the original cross-hatching was still showing on the cylinder walls. They looked like new. I was amazed. The first 3500 kms of the sled were put on using yamalube. The rest were put on using Amsoil. I broke the viper in using Yamalube, and it has seen Amsoil for the rest of the miles other than 1 litre of shell synthetic in Timmins earlier this year. The funny thing about it is the shell looks exactly like the Interceptor. I know looks don't mean a lot but I had never seen a 2 stroke oil that looked like regular motor oil until I bought the Interceptor. Then I see the shell is the same colour. Who knows. There is a good chance that shell makes the oil for Amsoil.

BTW I believe Yamalube is a SEMI synthetic :sly:

Correct.

One of my riding pals used the racing Amsoil in his Cats for years after the first season of Cat brand oil sticking his power valves. He has since switched to the regular Amsoil synthetic and has not seen any difference in the valves or plugs from the more expensive version.
