Which is the better engine in the 2006 line up the 600 SDI or 800 power teK? Opinion please? Is either or both noted to have problems?

both are good depending on who you are talking to. I have 600SDI now but next sled will be an 800, just want to have that extra bit of HP under my thumb

I've got a 600HO SDI now and my next sled will probably be the same... I don't need 800 power, especially when trail speeds are 50km/h here in Ontario.

I went with the 600SDI, because the 800 you should only use premium gas, and most places on the trail just don't have premium gas. And the fact that I don't need all that power, like someone said, the speed limit is only 50 on the trails, and that 600 gives you all the power that we need and great miliage. My wife and I are getting around 15-17 MPG. I really don't think that you will get that with the 800.

FWIW, my '05 600HO SDI called for premium (91 octane) gas and when it wasn't available, I used regular. No problems, just a little down on performance. I think they changed the requirement for premium on the '06s.

I keep seeing this, do you guys actually ride everywhere at 50 km/h???? I would say even a 600 is overkill for that. I think under the right conditions I can cross country ski faster than 50 km/h.

For the most part, yes. I am a law abiding citizen, but many people have no regard for the speed limits. Also, a lot of the trails cannot be ridden safely any faster (tight and twisty)

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) also have radar traps and you can be fined for speeding.

Contrary to the belief of others, the 50kmh speed limit really isn't as bad as people make it out to be.

There are always lakes and off-trail where speed limits do not apply...

I would have to say that in the bush trails that yes they do ride at 50KPH / 32MPH.
If you were to pay attention to your speedo while riding, you'd probably find that you're doing that allready anyway.

If you're approaching other traffic, hopefully you would slow down as well.
Maybe not quite 50KPH.

On the wide open straight stretches, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone doing the speed limit. As long as you use common sense, most cops won't bother you as long as you have your trail permit, valtag sticker and are polite and haven't been drinking. Of course, there's always the stories of a cop that pushes things to the limit.
They'll sit on the edge of town with a radar gun in their cruiser and clock sleds coming towards town and nail them when they get there.
I haven't personally witnessed this but I do believe it.

That being said, if any cops are reading this, I will not be in Cochrane this weekend along with our friends from SW having the time of our lives in great conditions.
But if I would be magically transported there in a dream, I and nobody else would be exceeding the speed limit. So don't bother going out in the cold dragging that ackward radar equipment with you. In fact, just stay home because nobody else will be there either. :lookaround: :whistling: :undercover:

PS, that isn't a pic of my sled below.
It's there because I like the looks of it.

I ride a 79 Arctic Cat TigerCat, or something like that.

Me neither :)

Psst... see ya there.

I'll be riding a '82 Yamaha Bravo, it won't go faster than 50km/h unless it's being dropped from a plane.

I have the 06 mxz 800 ptek and the manual says you can use regular gas. As far as mileage goes the 600sdi still gets a bit better mileage. My friend has the 06 600sdi and when we fill up he is around 5 -7 bucks cheaper, now mind you I have a good 100 pounds on him and im very heavy on the gas. I like the 800 it has lots of power and I love to let her go on the lakes. To me the 5-7 bucks saved at the pump is not worth the power I would be giving up on the lakes.

I don't know, but I really don't think that your manual is any different than mine, and mine says that the 800 tek motors should use 91 octane. Period. they do not recommend anything but 91 octane. But it's your sled, use what you want. But you say, 5-7 bucks.difference Well, that is for every fill. In a weeks worth of riding. the difference would be quite a bit. He would get a free trip to where ever you go to go snowmobiling. And around here, premium gas is at least $.25 a gal more than reg. gas.

My dad has a 05 MXZ X 800 P-Tek and I ride a 01 GT 700. When he uses 91 gas he gets very close to a 600sdi machine (within 1-2 $) when he uses reg 87 gas he uses the same amount as my machine. Thats a big difference. Its like over 5L or more.

The 800 P-tech is not as smooth as the 600 sdi since it's a bigger twin. I feel alot more vibration in the bars from 5800-6500rpm than on my 600 sdi. Riding the 800 makes my thumb go numb sometimes  . My 600 is usually 6-10 bucks cheaper at the pumps.
