I'm curious as to how many sledders out there actually ride a "stock" snowmobile? ;)

Look at my signature its nothing major but better than stock. I'm like that with everything I do though. I think there are quite a few snowmobilers that leave things stock and want as little hassle as possible. Otherwise systems like efi and dpm wouldn't be so popular.

Reliability is number 1 for us. I buy a new sled every year so i can not justify spending even more money on parts that wont fit on next years sled only to be 2 sled lengths faster at the end of the lake. I must be getting old because speed isnt my gig anymore its slow technical powder moves that gets my heart racing just M2C

Define stock, tuning clutches leaves it stock as long as you use OEM parts. I do not know anyone that leaves them the way they came from the dealer. I have changed tracks many times and still able to compete in stock class, as long as that track says Polaris on it.

My ZR-800 is pretty much stock except for clutch and jet tuning. I'll never understand spending big money for parts that require you to spend more time playing with it than riding it. If ya need to go faster, buy a bigger sled.

i've been down those modified roads and got one piston packaged wrong and it was lighter than the other. when it comes to aftermarket tricks that's not a game i'm willing to play anymore.

3 bone stock, well maintained, Polaris triples. One not so stock with V-Force
and M/10 conversion...

Reliability is the name of the game at this camp.

I left my '00 ZR500 EFI stock, just some tweaks here and there. ;) Every year think I'm going to make changes, but decide to save money to buy new sled down the road.

Depends on what sled. Here is the yes/no of my stock sleds.

'94 wildcat - no
'88 SRV - yes
'78 spitfire - yes
'03 prox440 - no sled yet, but the parts are waiting for it

If I wanted more power, i'd buy a bigger sled. Also, I'm a little worried about the lack of reliability that adding aftermarket parts could bring. I understand that the OEM manufacturers must strike a balance between performance, reliability and cost, but they sure have an awful lot more engineering resources than all the aftermarket manufacturers put together.

Darryn Duncan
10-01-2002, 07:27 AM
Stock, because of the reliabilty factor and its just too expensive to modify. I plan on doing some clutch work though.

PowderBoy
10-01-2002, 07:36 AM
My ZRT was clutched piped and jetted. It became less reliable with the more stuff i changed. Sure it was faster but the occasional headache wasnt worth it. I plan on leaving the new ZL alone

Stock has come a long way over the years, but so has aftermarket, just look at all the packages available, trail, trailperformance, performance,it all depends on what you want, dependability :) ,or wayfast  ,the faster ya go the less dependable ya get, also, some of the aftermarket stuff can be complicated, and its always time consuming, testing, testing, testing(machine and patience),not to mention the cost of repairs when it burns down, and if your on the edge of the envelope, chances are it will, snowmobiling is expensive, and seems plenty fast, factory racing provides the technical advances, and the alure of performance, who has'nt imagined they are blair, tucker, etc.so to answer your question, trailperformance for me(slp chubby, team secondary, gears)stock for my wife and son, seasons to short to wrench on everone else's sled, besides i dont want them faster than me :p my self esteem could'nt take it wha!wha! :cussing:

99 Zl 600 EFI Blue Viper, stock, Having to worry about fuel quality, too cold of temps, etc have kept it stock, the new F7 will stay stock, If mn ever lifts the stud ban on paved trails well, I may just invest in some studs. .

David
10-01-2002, 11:28 AM
Current ride, 01 zrt6 completely stock. Most of my previous sleds have been stock except for a main jet change in a couple of them. The reason for this probably dates back to my youth, growing up on a dairy farm. The addage then was "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

David

PS: If anybody has jettted down their 01 zrt6, I'm all ears.... :)

Good question, I am no where near being stock. Don't think I would like to be either. Thats just my two cents worth. :D SWRules

10-01-2002, 07:49 PM
My '96 V-Max 500 was bone stock... never a problem. I expect to leave my new Rev 600 stock too other than a few appearance items -- so far yellow ski loops is all. :)

The newer sleds are so much quicker than the older ones. I just like playing with the clutching, jetting, studs and some big carbides and i'm set! :cheesy:

My 2003 Snopro is stock and will remain stock.. its a must for racing..

My M-Cat 800 is highly modified.

Call it a compulsive disorder, but I cant buy anything without adding some aftermaket goodies right away. Lifted truck, fast bike, and the sled.....
Id rather ride a tweaked 01 than a stock 03 anyday.
Only downfall is the extra cost thats hard to recoup when its time to sell.

Is it still stock if it's been cryo'd? Other than that, just Boyesen's and 1.25 track and clutch tuning.

TaxiCat
10-02-2002, 12:09 PM
My sleds are pretty much stock other than clutching and jetting. I have actualy improved the performance of my TT600 moreso than that of the standard triple 600. That TT600 nedded a little x-tra go because of the weight. :sleepy:

see a lot of you guys think not stock is always working on them/burning them down. I usually research the sled I have figure out what us best for HP and reliability and wrk on it. I (knock on wood) have never burned up a sled due to mods. I have on the other hand burned up a stock 97 zr580 twice. Thenly wrencing I did onmy zrt600 last year was when mybrother eeked out a top end win from me n his 800. I went and changed gears for more top end and he wouldn't race again. Kevin

I clutched my EXT600, studs, and added a stinger silencer. This year with my F7 I am only adding studs, and the rest of the changes will be cosmetic.

Stock drivetrain but not stock handlebars, skis, or track. Hopefully I will long track the damn thing too here pretty soon.

nothing major here. Just clutch, reeds and a can..........

10-03-2002, 08:03 AM
My 97 600 SX is stock.
About all I'm thinking of doing is some clutching and maybe a pipe. For the type of riding I do, that is fine.

Maybe after a trip or two to the UP with some friends, that will change... :p

Snow Dog1
10-03-2002, 02:06 PM
Nothing major for me just aftermarket skis & silencer. Maybe looking for some new shocks in the future. Why put money in an old sled? Save up to buy a new ride!

The old Cheetah was mostly built out of spare parts but I think they were factory ones.
The Cougar has aftermarket skis and carbides so far, stock drivetrain though.

I find every MOD sled I ride is always better than stock set up. I think I would always mod my sled a bit, just to be a little different from the next guy. I try to add something to my sled every year I own it. This year I am swapping my track. Then my next purchase is a rk tek head. My signiture says what i already have.

I did my time with stock, improved, prostock and open mod drag selds. Now I just want to ride. My sled is mostly stock except long track , skis, handle bar riser, and ETS suspension coupling kit.
