: Bad Starter?

I have a good battery but when I try to start it reacts like a poor battery. I had
starter problems last year which turned out to be a loose wire on the solenoid. This year it worked great until the other day it just started acting like a poor battery, turns over real slow - not enough to start sled, but the battery is good.
Can a solenoid short out creating a poor battery symptom?
Or, maybe a pooched starter?
Any experience I have had with bad starters is usually the click-click,bearings, obvious no go's.
The sled starts with a pull and I have checked all wiring for breaks and continuity.
I can't see anything and I know this sled well!

Cheers and thanks for the help, and wasn't that a lousy season in Mid-Ontario!

The most likely cause is a poor ground to the starter. The easiest way to diagnose is to run a redundent ground using a booster cable directly from the battery negative post to the starter housing. Same applies for the positive cable. In the rare instance of it being the starter itself, the usual culprit is the drive end bushing being worn out allowing the armature to rub on the case winding during cranking. This will geneally leave witness marks on the rotor and starter case.

Had the same problem with a sled a few years back, stuck brushes not making a decent contact witht the armature. Cleaned them up, good to go!

Very true !,
If only 2 out of four brushes are making the connection, you only have 1/2 the cranking torque.
