: Any Networking Gurus?
Wolfman 10-02-2002, 09:57 PM I'm sitting here at a loss. My main PC has started this crazy load about 1/2 a page and then just stop. The little icon i the upper right corner continues to spin, but no more data is being loaded. The network activity icon in the toolbar stops blinking as well, same for the switchbox for my entire network. This problem is only for internet. I can play music files on this PC, share files with my neighbour just fine with no delays. I'm convinced that I'm looking at a wrong setting somewhere, but I'm going blank here. I'm at a total loss as to what to look up or for as networking has never been one of my strong points. HELP!!! What I'm on right (TV as a monitor in living room) SUCKS for reading anything. (graphics rock though) Thanx in advance.
Oh yeah, this is a shared satellite broadband internet setup via 100base-T wired networks at both houses connected by a linksys wireless bridge.
phazerhater 10-02-2002, 11:24 PM What OS are you useing? May be something as simple as a driver update for network/ethernet card?
Wolfman 10-03-2002, 08:02 AM I run Windows 2000 professional. Here's another strange part. Everything is flying right along this morning as it should. <<shrug>>
Steven Hohman 10-03-2002, 08:04 AM I've had that simular problem with my network, if you look at the router/bridge, there should be the little lights, if they are also blinking, you may have to reset it. There should be a tiny hole on the front of it where you can stick something small such as a pencil..etc.. Put the pencil in and wait for a red light to turn on, it should work if you have a simular LinkSys model.
On another note: I recently had my Router get fried from lightening, make sure you have a surge protector hooked up to it! My router has 3 fried ports and those three just go on and off and on and off...the forth is ok!

Welcome to Windows :p
Steven Hohman 10-03-2002, 08:07 AM If it is OK right now don't do anything to it! But if it starts to flicker, reset it and try again.
Wolfman 10-03-2002, 10:13 AM I'll keep the access point in mind the next time it hoses up. It is outside and is susceptable to the temperature extremes. No moisture can get to it though.
performancex 10-03-2002, 11:51 AM Did you try other web sites? I suspect the problem was that there was 86 people online on SW when you posted your message.
Wolfman 10-03-2002, 07:03 PM Yup, tried my Yellowstone forum (always slow there), and also the Saturn Forum. I gave up and went to the PC in my living room. Everything ran normally from it. Bad part about the living room PC is that it's set up primarily as a DVR and jukebox. The TV doubles as the monitor, and the text is hard to read on it. I posted the winter pics and the original post here from the living room PC.
performancex 10-04-2002, 10:26 AM Hmm, well, beats me. We have 16 computers sharing a dsl connection thru my desktop and no problems like that. Wait, we did have a problem similar a while back. It was due to the way it was all connected. We had the the dsl modem plugged into the network hub to share the internet connection. I changed it so we have the modem plugged into my Win2000 desktop, which of course is connected to the hub like all the other computers. I then set up ICS (internet connection sharing) on my computer. Everything works great now.
NDMtnSledder 10-04-2002, 10:27 AM Mine started doing something quite similar to that yesterday. We have cable internet set up to a Linksys router. My roomates computer worked fine and I could connect to him just fine. I had happened to download an update patch for XP that morning so I uninstalled it and guess what it works again.

I may have to see how the neighbour has the server set up. The sattelite is USB, and they had trouble making the wireless USB netowrk function properly inside their own house. We then wired them with 100base-T and set up the server. I wired my house for 100base-T while I had the drywall tore out during the beginning of the major rennovation/damage repairs. He set up the server, so I have no idea what the settings are. So far, the problem has not repeated. Slowed some while we were sharing b/w a bit, but no mid load stopping.
Wolfman 10-07-2002, 07:49 PM Well, the PC quit on me again, so I went to the neighbours and figured out what I needed to change. Changed a setting that tells the PC how much data it can receive before it must send out a response. So far, so good. Keeping my fingers crossed that it acutally works as advertised now.
