revrnd 05-05-2006, 04:30 PM I got this email today @ work:
City Council Approves Cell Phone Ban
Council Voted 8-1
POSTED: 12:49 pm EDT May 3, 2006
Drivers in the city of Detroit will have to end their calls, as a cell phone ban has been approved.
The Detroit City Council passed a cell phone ban for the city of Detroit on Wednesday.
Council voted 8 - 1, with Sheila Cockrel as the only opposing vote.
Council members said drivers could still use hands-free phones.
The ban takes effect immediately. [/b]

8vo fan 05-05-2006, 07:39 PM I agree! Some people just aren't capable of driving and talking on the phone, yet they try anyway! Even the best driver misses alot while talking on the phone! I even saw A cop doing it! Just plain stupid! I don't agree with most of these stupid comunistic laws, like the seatbelt law, but I think this one should be national+! :cussing:
CORY9 05-05-2006, 08:08 PM Can't say I disagree with this one, think we've all been behind some idiot yacking on the cell not paying attention!
JasonF 05-06-2006, 01:01 AM Thats wierd, I drive in the city all the time and I've never heard this. Honestly I don't see this snowballing, do you really think the people writing the laws would want to pass a law that affects them personally. A politicians cell phone rings non stop. :D
snow4mydooplz 05-06-2006, 05:55 AM I have not heard of this until now... I assume this is just in the Detroit City limits?
I don't like to talk on my cell phone while driving ( phone to my ear ) however, while I'm on my nextel 2-way I don't feel distracted at all as the phone is not to my ear and is held like a walkie talkie. I do know a couple of police officers up in this area so I will have to ask them if this law would include the walkie talkie feature as it is not technically the " phone". hummmm

idooski 05-06-2006, 07:48 AM I'm not normally for a regulatory law such as this, but I have to say I agree with this one 100%. Hands free is much safer. It's even safer than the talkies. I'm all for it and I hope it catches on. Some people (actually most people, I think) are somewhat incapacitated while on the phone. It's painfully obvious while following some of them. This doesn't compare to a helmet law or a seat belt law. I think it's right in line with the drunk driving laws. It's written with the safety of others in mind.

flyin-lowe 05-06-2006, 12:17 PM Its probably a good thing. Some say they are not distracted while on the phone and driving. That usually meeans they are so distracted that they dont realize they are not paying attention. Next time you get off of the phone stop and think if you really remember anything about what you passed while driving (other vehicle, signs, etc.) If your honest with yourself you might be suprised how much you miss.
revrnd 05-07-2006, 12:28 AM I've just about run over cars on the 401 that are poking along in the middle lane about 20 mph lower than the speed limit :bash: . When you pass them you see them yakking on the phone.
A few years ago the same thing happened to my brother. He whoa'd up & honked the horn. The guy looked over & bro starting yelling @ the guy. The guy promptly hung up. Probably figured he was going to be facing down the wrong end of a .45  .

[/b] Wow.....What an excellent way to present it....Excellent ! If I'm honest, No I don't remember the usual things, I'm just going through the motions of driving if I'm on my phone , and to think of all the teenagers out there doing it is really scary as their driving experience is already weak w00t w00t

I find this to be true when I am holding the phone to my ear. I have never run off the road or done anything else wrong while on the phone (that I can remember) Hands free works great for me. No different than talking to a person sitting next to me. Be safe guys. Get a hands free set up for your rig. Just maybe they won't have to pass a law state wide.
cooley 05-07-2006, 08:58 AM they have been banned in nova scotia for a couple years now, but really are not inforced.
paul yarek 05-07-2006, 06:46 PM today on the highway between delhi and simcoe we came up behind a fellow on a bicycle that did not seem to be in control wobbling all over. i had to laugh when i noticed he had a cellphone up to his ear. :lmao: i guess cellphones are dangerous on a bicycle too. :dazed:
me&mymxz 05-07-2006, 06:48 PM Many people driving who shouldn't be, unfortunately they use cell phones too. They will just find another way to distract themselves ( do makeup, eat, talk to passenger in the back seat whiile looking at them, shaving, reading, etc)
gravy davey 05-08-2006, 03:36 PM Thats great news we need to make this a country wide ban!!! I was almost broadsided by a woman on a cell phone she ran right through the red lite did'nt even slow down. :cussing:
snow4mydooplz 06-01-2006, 06:34 AM I heard on our morning News that they have revised this law a little.. They passed a law that cell phone usage can only be a " secondary " offense and a person can only be ticketed for the usage if they were stopped for a different reason. ( such as blinker, failure to stop ect....)

That's really too bad. What a way to wuss out and remove the teeth from a law. Since this law was passed, I have really been noticing how many people make really stupid mistakes while on the phone. Many of them near critical.
This law needs to be more important than the seat belt law. Cell phones are a danger on the road to all of us and not wearing a seat belt is only dangerous to the person not wearing one most of the time.
snofrog 06-01-2006, 05:24 PM oh my a law against cell phones in detroit while driving , next thing you know they will outlaw crack and prostitution

puree 06-04-2006, 08:50 AM a good police officer should have no problem finding another reason to pull you over if he sees you have a cell phone up to your ear. All he has to do is see you get too close to the center line or a little weaving and he has you. I know I never used to use my ear bud,,, simply held the phone to my ear and drive,,,,, just like Keith, I nearly ran off the road a few times and now I wear the ear bud everytime I am talking while I am driving.
I would love to see the law put into effect not only in Detroit, but across the country. I wonder how many accidents happen because of someone on a cell phone. Really makes you wonder if cell phone accidents arent fast approaching the number of drunk driving accidents that happen every year.
