: Pilot, Flex, Or Precision?

I just got a 2004 rev renegade 600 H.O. and it came with the precision skis. I have read and heard many negative things about them on the rev platform. I have only one day of riding experience on a rev, thanks in part to Thumbdoctor's generosity up in cochrane, So I didn't have much opportunity to compare anything.
I will definitely be replacing the skis with either a set of flex skis my dad (Trailblazer) has that were never used, but would have to buy the mounting sole, rubber, carbides and handles. So I have been considering buying a set of pilot skis. Along with taking into consideration the pilot ski, I am also wondering what would be the best to get, the 5.7 or the 6.9 skis. I plan to be doing as much off trail riding as possible and would assume that the bigger ski would help to keep me afloat.
Any input would be welcome.

The pilot is a better ski, IMO, than the precision or the flex. But, if I were going to buy a new set of skis, I would choose an aftermarket model. I have the USI PX301's. I think they are a great ski. A little aggressive for some, but somehow I doubt they would feel that way to you. :D They also 'float' much better than any Doo ski. There are other good skis out there, but I haven't tried them.

Thanks Keith.

He also posted this in general snowmobiling to get an answer quicker.
After all, winter is just around the corner. LOL
We wish.
He's decided that I'm buying his Precision skis for my Legend as they work fairly well on it and I do need new soles. Then he's buying the mountain Pilots.
His reasoning is that if he hits something or needs a replacement ski in a hurry, he'd have one from one of the 3 Skidoo dealers within 10 minutes of our homes. If something happens away from home, there's usually a Skidoo dealer around in snow-country. By going with aftermarket skis, he might have to wait for them to order in whatever part he may need. When you have as short a season as we do, you don't want to be watching it snow while you're waiting for a part to arive.

I would have to say he's thought that one through fairly well. LOL

I think his main question was along my train of thought all along.
If you're going to ride off trail and in powder, why aren't more guys running on wider mountain type skis to get the benefit of better floatation?
Could it be that there's a big trade off when running on groomed trails?
Maybe we can get that answered by those that know and have tried it.

The ski breakage thing is why I suggested the USI's. They are the skis that the Snow-X teams choose since they are so durable. I like the pilots. I had them on my sled all last year. The USI offers much more flotation than the pilots. Not really a big trade off in the trails with a flotation ski. Just a bit heavier. The USI's are MUCH more aggressive than the pilots in the corners. They have a taller keel which puts more pressure on the carbides.

He will like the pilots. No worries.

Thanks Keith.
I had USI's VX103 Lightning (I think that's what it was called) on my 94 Yam. V Max 600 LE.
They worked quite well and were miles ahead of the factory steel ones.
I did run into problems with one of the connector parts between the ski tip and the base. They shipped another to me free of charge but I had to wait 2 weeks for it. I think that's where Cody's concern over parts comes in or if he wrecks a ski sole.

Hopefully Cody will get some more posts on here and the other thread and he'll have to make up his own mind. Either way, I get newer skis for my steed. LOL

The flex skis on my 01 work well. That thing stuck like glue to the groomys but didnt work so well in deep powder. It just depends where you ride the most.

the pilot is a suprisingly good stock ski...i was quit impressed with it. if you have a 300 bux burning a qhole in your pocket i recommend trying the sly dogz. i live 10 miles from the factory and i got a pair for my 02 rmk and liked them...but i think they would be awesome on a trail sled. im gonna try the simmons out on my 1000 summit.
