In the top pic, it is in the middlle of the corner that he blew. He went strait, and almost made it back out. You can see his track in the top pic where he almost cleared the hill, but he was side hilling on a 600lb+ sled, and he is at least 375lbs himself. It was crazy. Gravity took over and he went strait down the hill since it was so steep. Seveal small trees fell victom on the way down.

Here is a pic of me (5'10", 255 lbs) in the middle, and he is the guy on the left. Not Fat. BIG.

One more that is a demonstration of breaking a prime rule in the mountains" Never highmark around a stuck friend". You can just see the head of the sledder who got stuck. It's just something you need to be aware of. If the officials tell you the avalanche danger is way high in an area that you're looking at riding in, then don't go there. Not sure about where Bonzi rides, but there is usually quite a bit of avalanche control in Colorado. I'd pay attention to when and where they are going to be working and plan rides accordingly. You can get some awesome scenery in the hills.

In the interior of Alaska we have no=nada=none avalanche warning system. It is up to the individual to educate themselves, there is an avalanche school. I lost three friends in two years, mostly I believe due to the odd weather we had for last year and the year before. Before, no one in our group wore beacons or probes, a few carried shovels for obvious reasons. We had many near catastropke situations during this period, I am sure some here read about the Avi that killed 6 sledders at one time, that was 4 years ago, I think.
The best equipment you can have is common sense, like in that picture I showed with the guy high marking around his friend, the reason there are no other tracks on that mountain, slides were coming down all around us, we decided to stay off the big stuff that day.
Losing my friends so close together is one of the reasons my signature line always says "RIDE SAFE"

I would like to ask you guys in Alaska a couple of questions.

I was up visiting my Aunt and Uncle, and my cousings in June. They live in Eagle River. Anyways, some friends and I might come up late in the winter (march, april) to do some riding. Can you guys suggest where to rent some good powder sleds?

We will stay in Eagle River, and try to commute. Any good places to ride in a decent drive from there.

You guys are really lucky, I have been trying to get the ol' lady to move up there!

UPrider - I know what you are talking about in Big Bay. Our big group has stayed right in Big Bay right across the steeet from the Moose Store. It is great riding up there (got to love that 2 way highway they have!) but the snow can get ya! It can get deep quick!

UPrider
10-10-2002, 10:01 AM
Yep, its basically my back yard for snowmobiling.. I do alot of off trail riding up there. Lots more powder than most of the rest of the UP, with the exception of the keewenaw and Munising-Grand Marais areas. As for the trail, you cant beat a two lane divided highway, it is one of my favorite stretches of trail in the UP.

hey UPrider, I know exactly what that feels like being stuck in dat two track road/creek. Last year my buddy and I thought we would go out one day and check out those two tracks around Mount Arvon. It was warm that day so we didn't start riding till about 4 in the afternoon and only planned to be out for about two hours. So we get going down one of these tings and next thing I know something is tugging at my back end. The last time I felt that was on my 74 yamaha crossing open slushy water. So my buddy stops just ahead of me cuz he is alittle sideways on the trail. I had to pull up beside him to make sure I wasn't in any water. I think we were on top of a beaver dam cuz when I stepped off of my sled I went up to my waist in snow and branches my buddy stepped ahead of his sled to get around it and a tree and... splush, down he goes to his waist only he is in water. If he would have gone 5 feet further with his sled and I would have had a camera I would have gotten some good pictures of his brand new viper/submarine. He wanted to keep going further but I convinced him that the odds were against us; running out of daylight,no rope,no shovel,no gps. With a little coaxing we got them turned around and headed to the cabin to have dinner and a laugh. He came real close to smacking a deer on the way back. That was the most exciting part of the whole week. :D Is that your xlt?

It WAS my XLT, somewhere on here I have posted a pic of my XLT after it lost by Knockout in the first round to a 6 ton redpine. I think it is in the General Snowmo forum, "Show us winter pics"... Now I have a Edge X 600, And I took the motor from my crashed up XLT and put it into a XLT chassis that I bought on ebay for the wife. :D I know all about the two tracks with water in them... you cant see it, but I am standing in about 4" of water in that picture.

Uprider, I know the feeling of Big Bay all to well. We were there 6 years ago and they got dumped on with 30" of new snow in 24 hours!
Next morning the trails were totally gone! Only place you could tell where the trail was,was in heavy wooded area, the sleds had a real tough time because it was pure powder only thing showing was the windshield, the guys with Polaris's could'nt even run at all with that much powder!

When we come up we stay at a house that sleeps like 20 people, the folks that own the little motel south of town also own the house. We normally shut the the Lumberjack down every night and are back on the trail by 11:00 am. There is deffinataly some beautiful un-charted area between there and Baraga. I have rode all over the U.P. and IMO Big Bay area is the most un-spoiled country to be had in Michigan............

Heres a pic of my buddy Brian. We got about 2 feet of powder the day before and in the super flat light we couldnt see that we had no chance of making it up that drift. It was easily 20 feet deep under him as thes a 30 drop off there and all the snow from a field ends up there. I had to ride home and get a shovel and it still took almost an hour to get him out.

Good advice. Everyone needs to take it to heart.

Once we were all taking turns on a steep face and there were several others watching. Finally a woman takes a little kid for a short little ride on a much less steep slope right by our staging area and they were coming back toward us when the little hill they were on slid right behind them. They were oblivious too it until we started pointing and waving them to hurry up. Nothing serious happened, But:

I dont know anyone who has used these guys before, but Alaska Snow Safaris in Anchorage are the only ones I know who rent powder sleds (RMK's). Most other places rent trail/touring sleds like skandics and indy trails. If you're serious about renting, find out about transport, since you wont have much riding in Eagle River. I personally like the southern Kenai Peninsula... about a 5 hour drive, but well worth it for the variety of conditions there (mountains, creeks, flatland, lakes, and TONS of boondocking opportunity). You can literally ride for 100 miles and never see the same snow, or another person.

Good2Go - Go back to page one of the thread, the restof the pictures are there.

Mind you guys, we were not in the mountains or anything, this is in Western Ontario. No shovels, as we have never needed em before. Just the big guy there just overshot the corner, and fell in the gully where the annow was 8-10ft deep. Might be average to anyone out west, but that is a 600+lb ZRT600, with a stock 121"x.750 track

RMKcowboy
10-10-2004, 07:13 PM
Luckily for me I wasn't there when this happened :D My wife pulled off this dandy about 3 years ago. She was riding a borrowed Phazer at the time. One of the guys in the group (who was riding the red RMK you can barely see) took off up a hill, and she thought he was taking a shortcut so she followed him. About 1/2 up she realized she wasn't going to make it, and turned down the hill. She was trying to slow down but couldn't because the track just kept locking up. The sled went into the air above the small tree on the right hand side of this pic. She jumped off right at that small tree, the sled cleared the road/groomed trail, and landed in a hole probably 40 feet below the road, on the left of the pic where you see two people walking down.

RMKcowboy
10-10-2004, 07:18 PM
Here's where the sled ended up... it took about 5 guys and the before mentioned RMK to get it out of the hole it was in. There was a tree that was forked at the top, about 4 inches around, that the Phazer hit and split right down the middle. We always have to make sure and stop every time we ride past this spot :D

RMKcowboy
10-10-2004, 07:21 PM
Here's the sled on it's way out. Total damage to sled- slightly tweaked left sway bar. Total damage to wifeys' ego- huge :lmao: These pics really don't do any justice to how steep it was and how far down the sled ended up, but you can get the idea.

i don't have any pics of good stucks but have plenty memories of them, and they all happen in slow motion, you can see it coming, you know its happening, and if you stop now it wont be to bad, but you always go for broke and screw your self. i remeber the very first "bad" stuck i had, i just bought my ultra two days before and i was riding to town to meet up with a friend, and you have to snake your way through town other wise the police wanna chat so in order to get to his house you go two blocks in, get on the rail road tracks service road follow that for 5 or so blocks then the road ends and you ride in the ditch of the tracks then theres a three part hill that goes up at least 60-70 feet to the welcome to dassel sighn on the intersection of hwy 15 and hwy 12 so i climb all the way to the top (no prob for any body its "the way") and i turn to go back down 12 and to his house when i come to the edge of the hill i realize its all drifted over and its about 60-70 straight down and im on top of nothing but snow. so i turn around and start back to get on solid ground, when i see a crack... and as soon as i see this carck i panic and gun it (this crack was a good 15-20ft in front of me) and as i gun it i watch the enitire hill side sorta shoot out the back of my sled and down i go... probly the only guy i know that can get caught in a mini avalanche in centra mn where if we got 6'' its a good day. after i was done falling i get out from under the snow and my sled is no where to be found alls i can hear is the soft thunder of the dg can under the snow three hours later i make it to my now very inpatient freinds house
