This is a press release from a club in Kapuskasing Ont.
I heard about it at our clubs meeting last night

"The Kap Sno Rovers are very disappointed in The Town of Kapuskasing’s decision to deny access for the snowmobile trail in front of the Kapuskasing Welcome Centre.

The reason for the refusal of access is based on the spring condition of the sod in front of the Welcome Centre.

Kapuskasing is one of the most popular snowmobiling destinations in the Province of Ontario. The region has the longest snowmobling season in Ontario with an average of 15 weeks of snowmobiling. This trail is the only link across Kapuskasing and to Kapuskasing businesses. The Kap Sno Rovers will have no choice but to reroute this trail which will by-pass the Town of Kapuskasing completely. This means that the economic spin-off from snowmobiling tourists, which many local Kapuskasing businesses enjoy, will be almost non-existant.

The Kap Sno Rovers approached the Town of Kapuskasing administration with positive solutions and offered to partner with the town in a mutually beneficial solution, but was denied by Council.

The Kap Sno Rovers requested a meeting with Council to explain their suggested possible solutions but were denied once again.

As locally-minded volunteers, the Kap Sno Rovers are disappointed that their efforts to add to the recreational enjoyment and economics of the community are not being recognized by the Town of Kapuskasing Council. "

There is a push for support

Wouldn't you think the local buisinesses would be up in arms over this?
Seems like council is shortsighted.

Just wait one season, I'll bet you will hear much more from the businesses when revenues fall short this winter.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KAPUSKASING TOP A SNOWMOBILE TRAIL TO REMAIN OPEN

On Monday July 17th, Kapuskasing Town Council agreed to listen to a presentation by the Kap Sno Rovers after denying land use in front of the Kapuskasing Welcome Centre.

Jim Mangan, Treasurer for the Kap Sno Rovers explained the many partnerships and examples of the Town of Kapuskasing and the Kap Sno Rovers working together. He explained that there was always a great working relationship. He stated that he hoped that council and the snowmobile club would be able to come an agreement that would enable the TOP A Snowmobile Trail to remain open through Kapuskasing. He explained that closure of this trail is not in the best interest of either of the parties.

Upon completion of the presentation, council reviewed the location and discussed possible re-routes near the Welcome Centre. Although no final decision was made, Kapuskasing town council suggested the formation of a task force comprising of Kapuskasing town councilors and Kap Sno Rovers members. The task force will address various possibilities to sustain the existing snowmobile trail for the upcoming snowmobile season.

Kap Sno Rovers are quite pleased that council has agreed to work with the club to determine mutually beneficial solution. Snowmobile tourism contributes substantially to the local economy each winter. Kap Sno Rovers volunteers are pleased that their efforts will continue to benefit their community.

The Kap Sno Rovers would like to thank all riders and snowmobile supporters that took the time to communicate the importance of keeping the TOP A Trail open through Kapuskasing.

The Kap Sno Rovers look forward to seeing many riders in Kapuskasing this winter!

I got the email from Candace Fortin in Kap earlier this week. She's involved w/ sledding @ the regional level. I can post her email address if you need info on the Northern Corridor.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to reply to the petition. I'll try to email the council & let them know we snowmobile in the area each winter.

If they really like grass they should consider laying their sod before November.
I wouldn't expect sod to survive if laid in Southern Ontario in November much less in KAP where they're on the verge of frost. The town should lay the blame with their landscape contractor for the sod's demise. It was doomed from day one.

Actually when I used to work in the contracting business, we once laid sod in mid Dec here in southern ontario that had been cut a week prior and kept inside where it was warm. The ground was frozen and had a dusting of snow on it when it went down. The municipality insisted it had to go down regardless of conditions. Turned out to be some of the best sod we ever laid, it came up green and lush in the spring. It was also on a road side and got pounded with salt durig the winter.
Yes I'm sure it was luck more than anything.

I bet the sleds running over the sod in Kap didn't do it any good but, it doesn't sound like the town staff did anything to help it come back either.
