: Need Help From My Zrt 600 Brothers!

I've got a 96 ZRT 600 that rides like a beast and sounds like one. First, there is no resonator-just three pipes that attach to a single-piece straight 3 holed pipe and out the bottom. It is annoyingly loud, and I want fix whatever the previous owner did. Do I just order the resonator and replace? Or does this sound like a real problem? If it is just a simply adding a resonator, is there any aftermarket resonator that would give a nice growl-without being annoyingly loud???

Second, are my handlebars adjustable? There way too high

Thirdly, I rode this past winter with my brother-he has a 95 cougar 550. We started with full tanks each, and after 4 hours of riding, I had less than a quarter tank left, while he had 3 quarters. Am I leaking fuel somewhere-or do I own a serious gas hog???? The same goes for my womans sled-she had just over half on a 95 mtn cat 580.

Any help is greatly appreciated...

First off...don't put too much faith in the gas gauges. Unless you have done some psuedo calibiration to it you should use about as much gas as the 580. Gas milage is effected by quite a few variables. Check your jetting and clutches, you can find some mpg there.

Without actually seeing the pipes it would be hard to say what you have....

The bars are adjustable, look under the padding and you will see.

Thanks for the info-

I think I can forgo the resonator if I can find an aftermarket pipe (exhaust can???) to give a cool sound...Any ideas anyone???

Oh those pipes, I can almost hear ya. I have my engine stock and after a day's riding when trying to fall asleep, I can sure tell what machine I was on. It could possibly use a new one, can they be repacked.

The first few years having my 97zrt600 I had terrible mileage. I kept on top of the jets last year and went from 7 up to 15mpg. It can take a bit of work when testing, there isn't a lot of room in there with cold hands.

I added a 2inch riser to my bars, max the throttle cables would go and that really helped out with the comfort, control and now the bars won't wack me in the kneecap when those pesky rocks jump in front.

The 97's have the ETT rear suspension and I have heard that will make a big difference. Do a search on here as others may have swapped in an ETT into an older sled.

I still love my baby zert but now I can't wait to try my C7.

What I would do is see if you can find someone that wants to trade your silencer (which is what I believe you have) for a stock can. I had bought a db silencer (which sounds exactly like you described) for my zrt and thought I loved it,,, after a good trip and the inability to think after I got done riding, I put mine up for trade and came across a guy with a good muffler that was looking for a silencer. We traded even up. I would figure a good picture would help you out in your quest.

As far as the handlebars being too high, I would assume you have a riser on them as they really wasnt that high back in 96. You can always get yourself a different riser or none at all,,,, that will definetely lower your handlebars.

Blaine is dead on with the gas tank. Dont just go by the gauge as when mine on the firecat says it is empty, I still have 3 1/2 gallon left,,, As for gas, you should see anywhere from 8 to 12 mpg depending on any other mods you have on the sled and how you are riding. (possibly higher on nice easy trail runs)

good luck with her,,, let us know if you have any other questions.

Get your carbs synced on it first, then do you carb jetting. Once I had my carbs synched PROPERLY, my mileage went way up and it ran so much better. You can repack those old stingers to sound a little quieter, but will redoo them every other year.
