i have recieved a R1 head to modify. i thought i would share with group what is done on a cylinder head in stages. the first stage is to baseline it and get all data that you can. first we clean the head, we use a soda blaster to remove the carbon. the neat thing about soda, is a washer will remove the soda blast media. we then sonic clean head and parts. after parts are clean we record the following. we measure combustion chamber volume this is used to deterime compression ratio. we then record intake and exhaust port volume. we then measure intake and exhaust valve diameters, valve stem diameter. the intake port and exhuast port length is measured. these number are fed into a computer to deterime the correct port volume. this data and air flow data will give a estimated port velocity. we then measure the valve stem protrusion, this the length of valve stem from the valve spring seat base. this is a critical measurement when performing a valve job, since this is shim type engine. we check valve spring lenghth and spring pressure. now it time to get adapters made to adapt head to a flow bench.we also have to machine some sort of lifting device to open the valves at pre deterimed opening to record air flow. we also are building a fixture to slot camshaft gears to change cam timing and lobe centers
