: Painting Side Panels?
supr_dave 09-21-2006, 10:05 PM Hello, I'm back. As it is approaching October, a mans fancy turns to sledding :)
Had the bug and pulled my REV out of the barn. Sat there looking at it and thought to myself "self, that sled needs some improving" While I had a great deal on my sled, I was never too fond of the color. It's the red adrenaline. So, before you know it, I pulled off all the panels, stripped off those ugly decals from doo, and now I need some advice. Is painting the red side panels etc.. possible so that it will hold up? I am thinking of painting the front a deep red and get some nice decals and polishing the tunnel and painting the back of the sled an aluminum color, except behind the seat, paint that black (the top lid of the storage area)
Should I leave the hood black? Any advice would be great, espescially on painting the panels.
Thanks,
Dave
doo rider 09-22-2006, 04:53 PM Yes the panels can be painted. Any autobody place should be able to do it for you. And it will hold up if its done properly

ExplorerSVT 09-24-2006, 09:32 PM Dave, Was it hard to remove the decals? How did you take them off? Did they come off clean? I've been thinking about changing mine. Thanks.
timespentsearching 09-24-2006, 09:43 PM the best way to remove decals is to use a hair drier and sticker really heat it up until the glue gets warm and they come right of. might have to get the corner up with a puddy knife then pull the rest but they come off clean
XCR583 09-24-2006, 10:02 PM Like it was said, use a hair dryer and heat the sticker up. What I did was get the sticker warm and start at a corner and slowly peel the sticker up while putting more heat to the sticker as you are pulling it off.
Hope to get rid of my stupid checkered stickers off my 04 Adrenaline in the next couple of weeks.
timespentsearching 09-24-2006, 10:08 PM if you have a little glue left on the panel then best way to get it off is to use Goo Gone. you can pick it up a just about any hardware store or fleet supply even target and walmart
ExplorerSVT 09-24-2006, 10:11 PM Thanks guys.
XCR, I have the same ugly checkered decals. I think its the worst looking rev out there.
Does anyone know if the panel under the decal is textured like the rest of the panel or is that area smooth for the decal? I'm wondering if I just took them off and left it with no decals if it would look funny.
timespentsearching 09-24-2006, 10:16 PM they should be the same (i dont own a rev) but if doesnt make sense for them to have just one part untextured i would make, making the pannel a pain in the you know what and more expensive
idooski 09-25-2006, 07:21 AM Thanks guys.

The panels aren't made to fit the decal. It will look fine w/o the stickers.
snow4mydooplz 09-25-2006, 07:41 AM Snowmutt has the Red Adrenaline as well.......He wanted to make a huge change......so he drew his own version of the Bee on Poster Board and then we went to a Vynal car shop and bought the products needed for him to transer his Bee and put her on. He completely peeled all stickers off his sled.
I on the other hand only wanted the Gray off mine and kept some of the white, and Red ( I have the Black Adrenaline)

idooski 09-25-2006, 07:59 AM Sweet! Great creativity.
supr_dave 09-25-2006, 01:12 PM OK, the stickers came off pretty easy without heat. There were two types, one type had a white backing and peeled off easy teasy. The other type had a grey backing, like a license plate sticker, they were a pain! Anyways, there was some glue residue left over which I removed with paint thinner / mineral spirits. Overall, a pretty easy job, maybe 1.5 hours - 2 hours altogether.
As far as the texturing, it's all the same, except on the tail pc. where it reads "Bombardier."
I've been looking for an easy way to get these panels painted, but there doesn't seem to be one. I've read and heard many different opinions, so I'm kinda stuck right now. I want the panels to come out smooth. I talked to an autobody supply store this morning and got two different stories on how to do it. Both ways costing over $200.00 in materials also I should add.
Has anyone tried the Krylon Fusion on there sled with success? I also was told not too sand the panels, but to build up with primer then sand. Then I was told I need the adhesion promoter, do I need to put the adhesion promoter on before the primer? Then I was told to use a urethane paint with reducers and hardeners etc.. I also was told to base and clear coat it. All I want is to be sure it's gonna work and the guys are the stores don't sound too convincing. I will try and get the facts soon though.

JasonF 09-25-2006, 03:51 PM What you need is a junk panel to practice on, put some on and see how it holds up to tossing it around the shop. Another option would be to clean the inside of the panel and try it on a small patch out of side. Then rub, scratch and scuff the painted area to see how well it adheres.
Be sure to let us know what you end up doing and how it works out.
supr_dave 09-25-2006, 09:10 PM OK, decided to try the krylon fusion on the back tail piece just behind your butt. I picked up some 400 grit wet and sanded for 15-20 minutes. It made a little difference I suppose. Just put the first coat of a gloss black on it. Can still see the texture quite clearly. I will wet sand again tomorrow and recoat. We'll see from there.
