Hello, I am a student working on the SAE mini Baja competition. We build cars from scratch using a 10hp Briggs and Stratton type 20 engine to compete in several performance as well as design events. Typically most teams go with cvt transmissions from comet but we were wondering what else is available. Polaris models are available with a deep discount but we have no technical information about them so we hesitate to go that route. I know when it comes to cvt's snowmobile racing is just about the best resource so i turn to you for some advice. Any suggestions on a model to go with that would play well with our 10 hp 12 ft/lb 3500rpm motor? I realize the biggest part of getting these to run well is the tuning and upkeep which seems to be the hardest part of cvt, are there any good references or tips to get us started down that path. Thanks for any input you can share.

the comet 102, 108 primary clutch are same in concept as the polaris p-85 or starlite clutch. They all have interchangable parts, springs/flyweights, does not matter. ACat primary is same concept too.... all parts interchange thru all manufacturers either OEM or aftermarket.

Grab Aaens "clutch tuning handbook"
I would even call Olav and tell him what you are doing, im sure he himself could point you in a direction. Olav is or was deep into SCCA mini car racing and has vast knowledge of clutch tuning.

I would recommend to have a list of questions written out and make time to call him.

happy tuning.

we are actually looking at the comet 790, I'm not sure how interchangeable these parts are. or if the tuning is still similar, have you seen them or have had any expierence?
