Tore down my motor today after a compression check of 110 and 115 p.s.i. and found some light scuffing on the intake port sides of the pistons. Luckily the cylinders are clean, but the pistons and rings need to be replaced. What is the best setup for a stock trail sled? Cost? Miles? How many needle bearings are there? I think I got em all? Thanks.

Another one for Cudney Pistons!!

I think there are 28 needle bearings but I am not positive on this. Hopefully someone can confirm or deny this.

How many needle bearings in each pin? Where do the short head bolts go? Is there an online manual or guide to reassembly? Torque specs? Thank you !!

I found all the needles. Found coated wisecos locally, I didn't want to wait for shipping from Canada. I can't stand something sitting apart in my garage. I should order a set of Cudney's now for the wifes h.o. for when it goes south. This experience has left me very disapponted in Brp. Next sled will be Japanese. At least Ski Doo sends me a brochure for their new sleds every year, maybe they could send me some top end parts, reed cages or a compression tester.

SPI pistons are the best I have found. I have used them in all of my series 3 motors .

Well, got it back together this morning but the o-rings under the spark plug bosses leak. Gasket kit didn't come with em. Off to the dealer, drain coolant, take head back off,,,,,

Bill not only will sell it to you but will help you with excellent after sale advice, a refreshing experience to say the least

Perfect example of the advice Bill would give.

Curious, how many miles on the motor? Japanese??? Maybe myself as well, but up here there is a SERIOUS cost difference that cannot be made up in resale value. I'm also too old to be slugging around any more weight then is necessary. In fairness to BRP I believe they have rectified the 03/04 ring issues. Yeah, I know, debatable point :dazed:

Opps, sorry, see that you already stated 2500 miles!

I guess when you have bought 5 new ski doo snowmobiles in 6 years you expect a little more than a side step. My brother in law has a zl 800 that had a piston issue and it was recalled and taken care of. My next piston set will be Bill's. I'll be buying a Yamaha next, plus dealer is real close.

I have a good realtionship with my dealer. Only 2 new sleds in 10 years but I try to get all my advise and parts from him. I have the '03 600 HO as well. Dealer replaced my pistons / rings under warranty at about 3,000 k's.

With 5 new sleds in 6 years I'd expect some help too ... but not with a 4 year old sled .... I doubt yamaha would do anything for you on a 4 y/o sled either.

FWIW, I had my rings done three times under warranty on my '03 600HO in 5000 miles... oh, and one cylinder too :)

Your dealer should be cutting you some slack, but even then, I'd be looking at Cudney's pistons instead of putting the same defective BRP parts back in. The supposed "new formula" rings for the '03 never seemed to make a difference on my sled.

Got everything buttoned up tonight, it seems to be running good, idles nice and starts good when hot. Need some snow to really break it in nice. I'm hopeful the wisecos will hold up. I've had nothing but good luck with them in Honda two stroke dirt bikes.
