Getting ready to cross over to the dark side and tear down my first clutch. Armed with the infomation in the pinned topic on both clutches, shop manual, and clutch tools, it's time. Not looking to tune, just bring back to life.

Here is what I have. Just aquirred an '89 Formula in nearly new condition. Everything is original, including the wearbars that I just replaced. The issue I'm trying to cure is that when running hard, then slowing down in the turns, when you get back on the throttle, the clutch isn't there and you have to really rev to re-engage. (Downshifting, I think) Also hard on MPG, because of this.

My diagnosis is that the driven needs to be torn down first as I suspect the spring is weak and not letting clutch close in the downshift.

Does that sound right?

from what you have described you may have a bad roller bearing and/or your TRA ramps may be going bad (not smooth) causing it to rev really high ...
Another thing to maybe consider is your secondary, your helix may be rusted to the shaft, not to worry this is really common. and when you come into a corner hot, let off the sheaves arnt closing like they should and are staying open thus making your belt free spin in the pullys until enough RPM by the primary is produced to get the belt to "catch" in th driven pulley then back to the secondary sheaves..

more and more i think about it, im leaning towards the secondary clutch itself... it really sounds like its sticking...Id check that 1st...

Thanks for the confirmation on the secondary. And I got help from a Minnesotian. I need to change my aviator address. Just move here my self from MI. TC Area.

And it's looking like I brought the MI winters to MN. :(

My sled used to do exactly that. It was just a matter of the arms in the primary clutch sticking, and some corrosion happening on the bushings in the primary causing it to hang up and not close right away.

I took everything apart and cleaned up using nothing other than scotch brite pads and some hot soapy water. Then a nice blow dry using compressed air, and everything has been great ever since.

The pinned topics in the technical section were very helpful when I pulled my first clutch apart, too.
