I purchased my 96 Polaris XLT 600 last spring. The guy I got it from says the clutch has been worked on. I think it has a yellow spring in the primary clutch. I've never had a sled that had performance clutch work done to it. This will be my first season riding this one. I've heard spring color has different RPM engagements. Any one know what they are? Skip

I will try to help you out here skippy. I think the spring is a 40 lbs pretension / 180 lb shift tension. with a rate of 104 lbs. The weights have to overcome the 40 lbs of pretension before the clutch will start to engage. The engagement rpm should be around 4,000 rpm. Under full throttle your engine should be able to pull 7,800 rpms steady. You actually should see a slight overrev but only momentaraly as you want to stay in your power band and not be pulled down. Just a note, you adjust you engine rpms with the weights in the drive clutch. (not sure if you know or not ) And I would advise, change only one thing at a time and pay attention to what you notice.. Let me know if I helped you at all. Later.

Thanks, I'll let you know. I'll have some notes for you. As soon as I get to ride it. Looks like a green Christmas this year.

couple things i need to know: is this a standard xlt, or xlt special? the standard has 34mm carbs, and the special had 38mm carbs. the hood would designate it as well. there's more to it than that, but that's just one thing that's different. would need to know if this was an aftermarket kit, or if it's stock clutching. i can tell you right now that that is not the stock spring!! the sides of the weights will have writing on them, what does it say? if you can find out from whom you bought it from what the clutch kit is, it would be a lot easier. i had a 96 xlt special. put a d&g silencer on, with a hotseat clutch kit. had 144 studs and holy sh#%!! it was fast and responded awesome. if i remember right, the hotseat spring in it was yellow. thing is, there are many aftermarket clutch kits, and if you dont know who made it, you wont know what the spring rates are unless you sent it out to have it measured. even then, it wouldn't match what it was new due to the cyclic stresses they are put thru. if you need any other tuning advice, please ask. -polaris doc

Update! okay the spring is blue with a white strip. It's an XLT 600 with 38mm carbs. It has a slight bog on low end. It seems like the idle mixture looks a little off due to the amount of smoke it produces setting. Once your past idle and start to mid range it picks up and goes.
