is the amd athlon chip the same as the pentium 4 ?
the sales guy said that it was but it cost $400 less and it seems to run slower then pentium 4s that i have tried ???

They are both great chips. Everyone has there own opinion about intel compared to AMD. I happen to be an AMD guy. I have an AMD XP2100+ and my roomate has a P4 2.2. My 2100 works out to 1.73mhz but becuase of the way it works will keep up with a 2.2 P4 in the benchmarks I've read. Thats jusy my opinion though.

well if you have the extra money go Pentium but the amd is a great chip also if you dont want to spend the 400 the p-chip has a little longer life span if you run them hard and can put out great things if you get other nice cards such as a g-force 4 128 mb graphics card and a good monitor

but personally i have had both and tis hard to tell the dif unless you know what your looking for both are great chips

I'll bet AMD has some kind of comparison charts on their website. I have an AMD1800 at home that works out to 1.55MHz. All I know is it is oodles faster than the P3-700 it replaced.

For the price range i chose AMD, i also got the 1800+ and it works great ! Some say it wont last as long as the intel, personlay i dont keep them long enough to find out ! i rather stay up to date then have a strong cpu out of date ;)

I have a p4 1.6 and it is slower than my fathers 1700 Athlon (which clocks in at 1.47 I think)

As with snowmobiles there are a lot of different things that contribute to a computers performance, not just horsepower (processor speed). All else being equal, Athlon and Pentium (of comparable speeds) will perform equally for 99% of the home users.

I prefer AMD at home, but at work where my future depends on the decisions and recommenations I make, and my stuff running ALL the time, I choose Pentium when there is even a choice. I don't doubt the reliability and performance of AMD, but in the context of a business a few hundred $ isn't much to stay "mainstream"

Which brings me back to why I like AMD for home. A few hundred $ on a home computer IS a lot.

its like i always said,

AMD=Gammers

Intel=Workers

I'm an AMD man all the way. Intel has no where near the performance to justify the price of their chips vs. AMD. I have an XP 2100+ running just under 2 gig and benches as good as Intels chip that is double the price.
BUT! If I was looking for the best chip to overclock to the nuts, it would be an Intel. Those guys are getting amazing OC speeds out of those! :0:
As you guys said though, AMD = gamers and P4 = office workers.
Best bang for your buck, AMD all the way!!! :thumbsup:

Well Dan and PH, Permafrost and I are gamers and we run Pentium in all 3 puters and have run pentium always. We bought an AMD once and had nothing but problems so we only bought pentium after that.

Your computer is just like your snowmobile : a little tweaking and you would be surprised at how fast it will run. :hallo10:

What AMD chip were you running Lady? Just curious...

People are way to concerned about the chip. I run a PIII 900mghz,64 meg ram,9.6 gig hd and notice very,very little difference surfing the net or downloading anything as long as i have broadband connection. If you wnat a killer computer I'd tell everyone to buy Computer Shopper magizine. Many companies sell complete Pentium 4 systems for $400-800 loaded out. All you'll need is a monitor. They Have AMD's for even less. AMD as a different arcitecture therefor works different. Unless your Gaming or doing seriouse Digital video editing you don't need a killer graphics card and cpu. 90% of users don't even need more than 128 of ram. Manufactures have hyped everything Like Yamaha did with the RX-1/Viper lol making us believe we need it and it's the greatest. And most do-it your selfers use AMD Athlon 2200+ chips with the Quanti Speed Arcitecture. I doo have a friend that has a new dual P 4 2.8's over clocked in a liquid cooled case that is a gameing monster. He's a puter freak though,dual ssci drives,2gig memory, just nuts. And the case is soooosweet! I'm enviuose though it cost enough to buy a new sled.OUCH

PH I think it was a celron I am not sure it was a long time ago. My puter is a P 3 700 256mb ram with a nvidia geforce 2 video card, the kids have a P 1 233 with a voodoo card, and perms is a P 4 1.7mhz with 256 mb ram and a geforce 4 mx 440. they all have 30+ gig hard drives too. We are hardcore gamers. We are currently playing Dungeon Siege with our intranet. The ether link card works amazing. :D :hallo4:

Well if it was a celron that is a Intel chip. There economy version. AMD has something comparable which is a Duron. I used to work for a place that sold both Celerons, Durons, Athlons, and P3 at the time. We had no trouble with any of them except the Celerons which we had problems with pretty much every one we sold. I agree with you Caleb my mom uses a Athlon700 for acounting and internet which suits her fine. I on the other hand do alot of programming and gaming. My friends P4 will lock up trying to run some of the programming enviroments but mine never does on the same thing.

I don't think you'd notice a difference between a P1 33MHz and a P4 2.8GHz if all your doing is internet stuff. When you start gaming or running high-demand apps, then you need more clock speed & RAM.
