hi, my buddy had a 2000 xc 700 45th anniversary sled and the head lights are going kinda crazy as well as the dash lights and gauges??
if we screw around with the voltage regulator they start to work and not work etc... pretty sure its the reg but does anyone know if you can test these and how?????

thanks....

Make sure the regulator ground is clean and tight would be the first step. Not sure if you can test them.

Most regulaters I've messed with in the past either work or they don't. If they don't, generally they'll let too much voltage through to the lights, which causes them to blow quickly. Like Cory mentions, they need a good ground to work right. They work by dumping excess voltage to ground. If there is a problem with that connection - you get what you are describing. Erratic lights.

all what they said is true. before replacing, do a resistance check on the stator. it's quick and easy. probably not the problem, but is an easy place to start. do conitinuity checks on the wiring as well as the grounds. the regulators are cheap too. easiest to just replace it. there are no tests for them, none that you can do anyways. without going into electrical theory, all a regulator is is just a series of diodes. nuff said. hope this helps. keep us informed as to what the problem was. -Polaris Doc
